Opening Paragraph

edit

The reason that Nelson City is often 'regarded as a separate territorial authority' is because it is a separate territorial authority under New Zealand's local government legislation. This opening paragraph is nonsenseSkinsmoke 01:40, 27 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree - and I've changed it accordingly. Someone has been alterming several of the NZ region articles to refer to a "central city", which makes little sense in any of them. Grutness...wha? 01:50, 27 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

So in New Zealand they make bridges out of Asian people? At least thats what the image of the "Swing bridge at Buller River" would lead me to believe. 68.108.115.69 01:20, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Someone had vandalised the picture file - it should be fixed now. Grutness...wha? 01:39, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tasman Region?

edit

Tasman is confusing, since it is both a district and a region - both of the other similar unitary authorities (Marlborough and Gisborne) are however referred to primarily as Regions (presumably since that title has precedence - a region has more importance than a district), even though they are controlled by District Councils. Should Tasman follow suit (that is, should the article be moved over the redirect to Tasman Region)? Grutness...wha? 01:36, 17 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Support. The intro highlights the inconsistency: "Tasman District is a region of New Zealand. It borders with the West Coast Region, Marlborough Region and the Nelson Region." Mattlore (talk) 03:32, 17 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
The first sentence alone suggests something is wrong - "Tasman District is a region of New Zealand." Grutness...wha? 00:54, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nelson and Tasman

edit

The article currently says the public occasionally apply "Tasman" to the two areas combined.

Without doubt the converse sometimes happens, possibly more often. The hourly weather forecast on Radio New Zealand National includes Nelson and makes no mention of Tasman. An online survey I have just completed asks respondents which region they live in, listing all except Tasman. My Collins desk diary lists provincial anniversaries including "Nelson & Buller". That's true enough (though TVNZ's weather at least does refer to Tasman). There is certainly a great deal of confusion in the New Zealand percetion of the area. I suspect that part of that is because of the old Nelson province, and more than a little is because of the (until merged about five years back) "Nelson Bays" provincial rugby union, which covered the whole of Tasman as well (ironically, that merged with Marlborough to form Tasman rugby union). Tasman RegionTasman District – Article calls it "Tasman District" but on 22 July 2009‎ user:Grutness moved Tasman District to Tasman Region over redirect, stating: It's primarily a region; secondarily a district. Following Talk:Gisborne Region#Requested move 24 May 2014, it seems to me that this one should likewise be moved. – Fayenatic London 12:55, 10 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Support. I agree with this. I don't know how one could say that it's "primarily a region" unless you come at it from the POV that regions are more important than districts. Regions are usually a larger authority than districts, but in this case they are essentially one and the same. Similar considerations might also apply to Marlborough Region, which is also governed by a unitary authority, the Marlborough District Council. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:27, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
