Why "Teatro" rather than "Theatro"?

edit

The theatre has "Theatro Municipal" written in letters a metre high on its facade, so it was clearly the historical name of the building. The website for the theatre is http://www.theatromunicipal.rj.gov.br, so it's also clearly the preferred current name. Where did the "Teatro" spelling come from? @Scarabocchio: Teatro is the name for theatre in modern Portuguese. This change has occurred since the theatre was constructed. Hack (talk) 16:04, 16 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Teatro Municipal (Rio de Janeiro)Theatro Municipal (Rio de Janeiro) – per the official website, Theatro Municipal is the official name of the theatre. There is no English common name for the building. Hack (talk) 16:04, 16 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Support - it appears that "Theatro" is an old fashioned and somewhat obsolete spelling of the Portuguese word "Teatro", hence why many sources spell it "Teatro" consistent with modern usage. However, it does seem like both the official name, and a majority of sources, do use the old fashioned "Theatro" form, presumably because it's an old building and that's how it was founded. Much like the Encyclopædia Britannica, which uses an old fashioned spelling with æ ligature rather than more modern Encyclopaedia or Encyclopedia spelling. The spelling in the Portuguese Wikipedia isn't necessarily to be taken as gospel here. See also Theatro Municipal (São Paulo).  — Amakuru (talk) 15:34, 25 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
