Image available
editI have uploaded Image:Textus Roffensis ms.png which appears to be the right image for this. However, the description in the book I took it from says it shows the first page of Ethelbert of Kent's law code, which doesn't fit the description in this article. So I'm leaving it until someone who knows this topic can figure out what to do with it. Mike Christie (talk) 12:53, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Numerals
editOn the last blank page, facing the first page of the Laws, (leaf 10) is a note in Early Modern English. It is headed "Numeral Characters here" and lists vertically i, 2, 3, &, ς, σ, Λ, 8, 9. Alongside the Greek symbols are listed the more familiar 4, 5, 6, 7. Underneath the same hand has added "This shews these Arabick Characters to have been used here about the year 1115 <indistinct> Ernulfus <rest is indistinct>".
IF that date is correct, it is a very early use of Arabic numerals in Northern Europe. does anyone have any more information about the annotation? Why is it there, the "Laws" start off using Roman numerals as one would expect. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 14:46, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
New section by John Adiva
editThanks for the new section summarising the contents, but this duplicates the first paragraph of the history section. I suggest moving this paragraph to your section and merging it with your new content. Dudley Miles (talk) 18:47, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
