The Athletic Grounds

edit

This ground was called The Athletic Grounds, as per Millwall: The Complete Record by Lindsay and Tarrant. Page 117 in the Grounds section names it as this, as it does throughout the rest of the book. The image in the article is an illustration I took from the era and Millwall Athletic Ground is not the official name. Page 244 also states "Athletic Grounds opened and the club changed to Millwall Athletic (from Rovers). TheLostBoy (talk) 20:21, 6 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Also, checking the Official website at https://www.millwallfc.co.uk/club/history/ - I found this quote, "1889 - The club is re-named as Millwall Athletic after relocating to The Athletic Grounds." TheLostBoy (talk) 20:54, 6 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
An 1894–96 Ordinance Survey map labels it as "Millwall Athletic Ground".[1] It corroborates the illustration's caption,[2] and thus is an appropriate name to disambiguate (WP:DAB) this article from the nine other articles that share a similar title. — AFC Vixen 🦊 15:22, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

The Athletic GroundsMillwall Athletic Ground – This specific name found in an 1894–96 Ordinance Survey map and a contemporary illustration,[1][2] would be useful as disambiguation from the nine other articles that share a similar title, per WP:DAB. — AFC Vixen 🦊 10:40, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Oppose—As per Millwall: The Complete History by Millwall's official historians Tarrant and Lindsay, and the history page of the official Millwall Football Club website, it was called The Athletic Grounds. Perhaps like The New Den is now known as just The Den, names change over time. I don't believe an ordinance survey from 130 years ago trumps two more current official club sources as a more reputable source. Regarding disambiguation, none of the other Athletic Grounds begin with 'The'. If you want to be more precise with the name, The Athletic Grounds (Isle of Dogs) would be more accurate. Natural disambiguation should be preferenced over parenthetical disambiguation per WP:NCDAB. — AFC Vixen 🦊 04:55, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

The Athletic GroundsThe Athletic Grounds (Isle of Dogs) – The previous discussion produced tacit support for parenthetical disambiguation as a compromise to resolve the issue. However, an attempt to implement this change by TheLostBoy was reverted by 162 etc., who deemed there to be "no consensus" in said discussion. Therefore, I'm raising the issue again to gauge a more explicit support and/or opposition to parenthetical disambiguation. Also pinging GiantSnowman and In ictu oculi as participants in the previous discussion. — AFC Vixen 🦊 21:24, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
