I have to be that guy - wta the letters mean? G N O M E. please explain? example: with GNU, while explanation is not satisfying, at least the article for GNU mentions that it is a recursive acronym. which accounts for the N & the U.

Criticism of GNOME

The GNOME project has been controversial at times, as evident through clashes with the greater Linux community over the years. As an example, see the recent GTK4/libadwaita fiasco, and disagreements with the Budgie project over this.

I think this page should outline at least some of these criticisms. At present, the only material I can find documenting this is GNOME#Criticism, but it only concerns the criticism of GNOME 3.
