Requested move 31 August 2017
edit- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: page moved. (non-admin closure) Steel1943 (talk) 17:30, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
Other (disambiguation) → Other – There is no primary topic, so the DAB should be at the base name. It is currently a Wiktionary redirect, contrary to the guidelines for these, and this has been the subject of a minor edit war. See Talk:Other/Archive 1#Leave this page as a redirect and Talk:Other (philosophy)#Requested move 11 August 2017 for previous discussions. Andrewa (talk) 01:26, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

- Speedy move. This is basically a WP:MALPLACED page. No such user (talk) 13:54, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- Support move. Copying part of one of my comments at Talk:Other/Archive 1#Leave this page as a redirect, made after sampling and fixing 40 or 50 links two days ago: "From what I've seen so far, about half the links to Other relate to Other (philosophy). About a third (the verbal use) relate to Othering. The rest are the usual mixed bag - Other Awards/Languages/Parties etc. where no link is in any way useful. With this amount of confusion, I consider that there is no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, and that Other should be turned into a DAB page once the incoming links have been cleaned up."
- I also refer to Template:Wiktionary redirect: "Soft redirects to Wiktionary are to dictionary definitions, and generally Wikipedia is not a dictionary."
- I also ask this question, in case it be argued again that Other (philosophy) is WP:PRIMARY – what percentage of English speakers know what The Other is? I suspect, less (and possibly a lot less) than 1%. Narky Blert (talk) 21:02, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- Support. Provided that the discussions leading up to this request be preserved, and that a thorough check be done on pages that currently link to some form of "Other" to see if the correct topic is listed/to avoid breaking anything. Other (disambiguation) will likely be deleted after the move, should it take place, as it will no longer be necessary (WP:G6). HapHaxion (talk / contribs) 02:08, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
- Other (disambiguation) will need to be kept as a redirect after a move. See WP:INTDAB. Narky Blert (talk) 10:01, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
- Exactly. Deleting or suppressing the redirect as HapHaxion is suggesting is the complete opposite to both policy and practice, and this is stated in many places, see WP:PMRC for example. WP:G6 is for uncontroversial deletions; To claim that an action that could get a page mover's rights revoked instantly is uncontroversial is somewhat pythonesque. We are all learners here, but that needed to be clarified. Andrewa (talk) 16:11, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
- Fair enough. Kinda learning through this too. HapHaxion (talk / contribs) 18:42, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
- @HapHaxion: If the move is made, User:DPL bot will pick up the bad links and WP:DPL will get stuck in. I've seen one undoubtedly correct move which broke 750 links (Vinyl), all of which were sorted out within a couple of days (fewer than 10% of the links before the move were correct). WP:FIXDABLINKS says that the mover is supposed to repair all links before a move is made; but WP:DPL members know that many movers do not. Which is part of the reason why WP:TDD currently reports 32,463 bad links to DAB pages, and reports around 1000 new bad links to DAB pages every single day. Discussion
edit- Any additional comments:
The lengthy discussion at talk:other (disambiguation) should be preserved IMO. Not quite sure where... perhaps move to a talk subpage such as talk:other/previous discussion (suppressing the redirect for simplicity) before the move itself?
The target page itself does not have significant content or history IMO provided the talk is preserved. Andrewa (talk) 01:37, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- A similar discussion to this, at Talk:Other (philosophy)#Requested move 11 August 2017, decided "no move". Anthony Appleyard (talk) 03:02, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- Are you sure of that, Anthony Appleyard? That RM, to which I linked in the nominator's rationale, was to move the specific article from other (philosophy) to the base name, and that was rejected with I think a clear consensus that the DAB should instead be moved. However there's been subsequent edit warring and discussion over this point, hence this explicit RM. Similar is not the correct term IMO... or to the extent it is, then the decision was move the DAB. Andrewa (talk) 03:20, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- Comment. I've notified WP:DAB of this discussion, at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation#Other, to invite further input. Narky Blert (talk) 21:14, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- Good move, but they should be using software tools to be automatically alerted. Andrewa (talk) 09:23, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
- Which software tools? The editor who wrote User:DPL bot (User:JaGa) has been lowly active for over a year, and the tools available until recently at dispenser.homenet.org seem to have been disabled. I wouldn't have the first idea about how to write a bot which picked up WP:RM discussions about DAB pages, let alone how to notify WP:DAB about them. Narky Blert (talk) 21:55, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Article alerts. I see the wikiproject is already subscribed. But the members still need to watchlist the report pages for it to work best. Andrewa (talk) 00:08, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

- @Andrewa: TY, I've bookmarked Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation/Article alerts (which I hadn't seen before, and which has few watchers). Narky Blert (talk) 19:30, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Move discussion in progress
editThere is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Other (philosophy) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 21:59, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
