Presentation of Colors

edit

I uploaded a color-adjusted version of Presentation of Colors, 1864. The original seemed yellow to the point of error. However, every copy of this painting I found seemed to be the same yellow color. Either the author painted it with a wicked yellow tint or the scan is bad and every copy online is derived from that scan. I tend to think it's the latter. Feel free to use the edit in the article if you feel the original is in fact wrongly yellow and the edit is a better choice. I realize that because I cannot find one single copy of the painting other than yellow ones, my edit smacks heavily of original research. That's why I hesitate to make the change myself... but I'll put it out there for discussion. – JBarta (talk) 12:22, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I replaced the yellow-tinted version with yours, on the presumption that your version more accurately portrays the original. If evidence comes to light that the original is yellow-tinted, it can be restored. Beyond My Ken (talk) 16:25, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Comment - Not sure if this is important or not, but the club was founded during the American Civil War, by those who supported “The Union”. ie, the word “The” in its name has some historical significance. Whether this is enough to overcome the provisions of WP:THE, I am not sure... I just wanted editors to make an informed decision. Blueboar (talk) 20:11, 24 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hunting the Irish

edit

Considering that the people who founded the Union League Club during the Civil War didn't fight, it is malicious and hypocritical to claim with a blatant generalization that New York City's immigrant Irish bitterly opposed the war. From the beginning immigrants made up half of New York City's soldiers with the Irish being the largest group. The many, many Medals of Honor won by the city's soldiers and sailors attest to their valor. That's not counting their children. I've edited out the offensive remark. If that remark is restored, it's evidence that the bigotry of George Templeton Strong, evident in his diary, still lives today. And, of course, denial of that the soldiers' and sailors' valor is the most despicable kind of hate. 2600:8800:4702:B900:FD37:8A18:488:328 (talk) 03:37, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
