Ownership and control
editOK The US provides funds for the upkeep of facilities and has a large logistics depot there, but ownership and control are definitely in Omani hands. NOTHING happens at Thumrait without the authority of the Station Commander!!!!!!!Petebutt (talk) 19:20, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Name of Article
editThis article is titled RAFO Thumrait air base. Presumably RAFO stands for Royal Air Force of Oman. Is not the title of this military arm The Sultan of Oman's Air Force?--Lineagegeek (talk) 17:33, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- "The Sultan of Oman's Air Force" was the correct name for that entity until 1990. From Royal Air Force of Oman:
- "In 1990 the SOAF was renamed the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO)"
- I had to add the following reference to Royal Air Force of Oman to support this statement, because the previous editors hadn't supplied it:
Changed lead paragraph of article for accuracy
editThe lead para stated that Thumrait Air Base is controlled by the United States Air Force. That would be very unusual, since the base was built by the Sultan of Oman and continues to host units of the Omani air force.
However, I decided to check the reference cited at the end of the paragraph to see if any evidence supported the statement that the USAF controlled Thumrait and found this sentence in the "remarks" section of the page cited:
"TFC PAT US acft not auth to use rectangular pat, unless auth by RAFO. Ftr rectangular 2,500 MSL, transport/bomber rectangular - 3,000 MSL. Copter -2,200 MSL."
This implies the contrary to the old lead paragraph's assertion. Obviously, the Omani air force DOES exercise control over Thumrait Air Base and there are parts of that facility denied to US aircraft without approval from the Royal Air Force of Oman.
I changed the lead paragraph to read:
"Thumrait air base (IATA: TTH, ICAO: OOTH) is a military airport located near Thumrait, a town in Oman. The The United States Air Force is a major current tenant of Thumrait Air Base.[1]" loupgarous (talk) 14:23, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
