I don't want to flame anyone, but I am very put off by this approach. I do not see any place in this outline for "practical" linguistics matters - like descriptions of real languages, language learning and teaching, or even language acquisition by children. Call it applied linguistics if you want to but theoretical linguistics cannot exist without applied linguistics.

The distinction I want to make used to be made in anthropology by the names ethnography and ethnology. Unfortunately I can't do that to "linguistics". I don't dare suggest any changes because I am too hostile to what I see here to be really neutral. -- Kleinecke

I notice that although there's nothing at structural linguistics there is content at Structuralism#Structuralism_in_Linguistics. Should this content appear at structural linguistics? Lukobe 04:13, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Quick explanation of Wikipedia outlines

"Outline" is short for "hierarchical outline". There are two types of outlines: sentence outlines (like those you made in school to plan a paper), and topic outlines (like the topical synopses that professors hand out at the beginning of a college course). Outlines on Wikipedia are primarily topic outlines that serve 2 main purposes: they provide taxonomical classification of subjects showing what topics belong to a subject and how they are related to each other (via their placement in the tree structure), and as subject-based tables of contents linked to topics in the encyclopedia.
