Notre Dame only recognizes 11 National Championships, not 12 as stated in this article. Changed the sentence, rewording in the spirit of the change is encouraged. Kchambers (talk) 12:13, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why is the Tuskalusa spelling used. The only other place I've seen that spelling is his Wikipedia article. I think this should be changed. Kchambers (talk) 12:05, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why doesn't this page mention the area's history of KKK being headquartered there? Talmudscholar 23:28, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think that's relevant unless there is a source that states there was a solid KKK headquarters in the city limits that existed beyond the period where the KKK maintained membership in every area throughout the region. Kchambers (talk) 12:05, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wondering how to edit this U.S. City Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Cities standards might help.

Stray bracket

edit

I see a stray bracket at the top of the article... couldn't fix it myself after looking at it for a while. Can anyone else take a look?

--OEP 22:32, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Looking at it again, I can see it's attributed to the citybox markup somehow... IE if you take out the skyline image it's not there anymore.

--OEP 00:34, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Most likely, the problem arose when somebody edited the citybox template and messed something up. It's fixed now. --Ttownfeen 03:06, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
It kinda bothers me though. I looked on a couple other pages and none of them had any problems, but at least it's fixed. --OEP 03:31, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mercedes Benz is not in the city limits

edit

I suggest you look at the GIS site for the City of Tuscaloosa at [1]. Or you can look at the screenshot I took of the GIS site: [2].The roads around MB are in the city limits but the plant itself is actually in Tuscaloosa County. I was incorrect in stating that it was in Vance, but it is also not in Tuscaloosa. Jasgrider 18:09, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I stand corrected. My apologies. --Ttownfeen 02:12, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

The plant itself a Foreign Trade Zone thus in actuality part of Germany so in reality neither of you are correct. But the area radially away from the plant has been incorporated by the city and is serviced by Tuscaloosa County (sheriff, water, etc.).

That bit about "part of Germany" is quite an overstatement. The FTZ status allows deferment of some customs duties to facilitate the manufacturing process, but, as the Board's FAQ states, "FTZ sites and facilities remain within the jurisdiction of local, state or federal governments or agencies." --Dystopos (talk) 22:29, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Population discrepancy

edit

After noticing a suspicious change to the population (increased by just 5), I looked up the cited pop data. The lead paragraph says, "population of 83,052 (2006 U.S. Census Bureau Estimate)." But the cited Estimate is not for 2006; it's for 2005. And the CSV file referred to lists the pop. as 81,358, not 83,052.

So, what's going on here? What's the real number? --Jeremy Butler 11:23, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

A question about "capstone"

edit

I see "capstone" every where in Tuscaloosa, but no one can tell me anything aboutit, or what it means?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.178.238.252 (talk) 01:29, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

The University of Alabama is refered to as The Capstone. More than likely in reference to it's importance to the state of Alabama.--Kchambers (talk) 07:45, 7 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

As early as 1913, University president George H. Denny referred to the University as the capstone of education in the state. It stuck. See The University of Alabama: A Pictorial History, University of Alabama Press, 1983, p. 152. Clark Center

It may be worthwhile to look at addressing the "In popular culture" section with reference to Wikipedia:"In popular culture" articles. Sooner or later someone will slap a big ugly banner template up there. --Dystopos (talk) 03:05, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I assume you are speaking about some of the passing references to Tuscaloosa "in popular culture" like the bill maher reference or should we just try and find citations for everything? Its been a while since i worked on a city article. Personaly i think most of the popular culture section is nothing more than some city preening and yeah i live in Tuscaloosa so I'm guilty too. Its probably not really all that important.Trey (talk) 06:02, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

How about the reference to Tuscaloosa in the song "April 29th, 19992" by Sublime? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.13.80.114 (talk) 18:54, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

General Information

edit

RollTide13 added this section to the article. I don't know about you, but it seems a bit redundant, not to mention unencyclopedic, to me. What are you thoughts? RollTide13? --Ttownfeen (talk) 21:25, 15 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ttownfeen. I understand your viewpoint about the newly added section and I can edit it, basically eliminating the redundancy aspect of it, if it's that noticeable. --RollTide13 (talk) 05:07, 17 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please fix vandalism (post-tornado)

edit

Present tense changed to past, as if the city has ceased to exist after destructive tornado. This user has been banned, but the vandalism remains. I tried to revert it, but could only revert back one step. Could someone with Reversion powers complete the task? Thank you. Furfish (talk) 20:52, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately too many intervening changes had taken place, so I did my best with manually fixing the article. If you see anything I missed, please feel free to go ahead and tweak. --Elonka 23:44, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Help Needed with Tornado Section

edit

{{help}}

This section is bare bones and needs contributions.

There should also be external links added to (legit and carefully checked out) emergency aid sites.

Perhaps there should also be a new Wikipedia article on the relief efforts.

Issues with language and content

edit

This article is very long and reads more like an eager press release than an encyclopedia article. Among the excess of information, I was not able to find an explanation of the origin of Tuscaloosa's name - which I, and possibly most of the world, have heard for the first time after the April 2011 tornadoes. You have my best wishes for the recovery.

The history section boasts a flattering nickname from last year, scenery shots for a film of no significance, and recent regulations about bicycle taxis. The economy section lists about 20 shopping centres, none of which are explained to be notable. "Cornerstone" and "anchoring" sound like promotional language to me. Tuscaloosa's universities have their own articles, and could be adequately described in one paragraph (or sentence) each, as on the more encyclopaedic articles for the cities of Adelaide, Calgary, and Leeds. Why, I'll find the Strip pulsating with night life, and I now know where to find professors mingling with students, and which bar is smoke free. Is this is a travel guide?

I look forward to seeing a more graceful and informative article serving Tuscaloosa. --203.213.232.176 (talk) 13:42, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

And just out of curiosity, why do you have issues with this? Why is this such a significant problem? It reads like almost every other American city page, IMO. --RollTide13 (talk) 19:08, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

How significant is it? Merely significant enough to mention how it could improved. If other articles about American cities face similar problems, then they could be improved in similar ways. I don't make a habit of reading about American cities, and it is this one I found. I imagine it should strive to meet the same standards as those linked articles about cities in Australia, Canada, and England. --203.213.232.176 (talk) 10:17, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • The article has become a bit cluttered with extraneous and unencyclopedic information. I've been rather busy as of late so I haven't had the chance to go through and clean up the necessary areas. I think the Culture section is most cluttered. We need to be more discerning about what Wikipedia is not. --Ttownfeen (talk) 01:50, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ann Arbor, Michigan looks like a good example article to look to. --Ttownfeen (talk) 02:05, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I personally have no problem with the current page and many people I know who frequent the page don't have any problem with it either. I do feel some of the paragraphs should be reformatted and a few pictures should be moved to the gallery, but other than that, I'm fine with the current page.

By the way, God speed to everyone in T-Town. --RhYno12 (talk) 03:23, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I too think it's a great article. However we should always strive for improvement. --Ttownfeen (talk) 05:39, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Arial Pictures of Devastation Needed

edit

Can someone experienced in Wikipedia images help? There should be some pictures taken from the air. I have seen some that are incredible but don't know enough about Wikipedia image guidelines.

24.8.177.59 (talk) 01:19, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Some news images can be used (it depends on how the owner designates and tags the picture) and there are other ways to get legal public domain pictures. Anyone here have anything constructive to offer rather than just saying "you can't do this / can't do that"?

98.245.172.142 (talk) 22:59, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, if you know what to do, do it. You don't need our permission to upload photos. --Ttownfeen (talk) 22:04, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Concerning Northport in the cityscape listing

edit

I hate to sound nitpicky, but should Northport be mentioned in the cityscape section? I understand that everyone considers Northport to be apart of Tuscaloosa, including myself, but I don't believe its population or total area size is factored into the city of Tuscaloosa's numbers...

Can anyone clarify this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by RhYno12 (talkcontribs) 00:15, 28 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, it should not in my opinion. --Ttownfeen (talk) 01:25, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Northport is certainly part of the metro area or micropolitan area but it is distinct in every possible

respect. JodyB talk 13:30, 7 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Climate Section

edit

I'd like to revise the whole climate section. I like the current information that is presented, and I would like to include all of it's information. However, I feel that there is additional information (especially flooding, drought, heat, fog, mild winter, etc...) that should be explained. The entire climate section looks like a blob; the temperature/precip figure looks awful, and I hope anyone who is capable will pursue fixing it.

If anyone has objections, please comment. AlaGuy (talk) 06:13, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The table with the Precipitation is incorrectin for the (mm) values. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.34.221.176 (talk) 19:43, 27 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Description of name change timing

edit

If it was changed in 1901 (or 1900), you can say it was changed at the start of the century (depending on when you count centuries as starting). If it changed kinda gradually, then say that. And perhaps mention a couple of significant stages in the process, or at least hint at the order of magnitude of the change-process’s length. I don’t remember what vague wording I replaced it with, but it was better than pretending to have conveyed some verifiable info, when we don’t have anything with a WP:RS. OK?
