History notes
editObviously the detailed history should go in the state articles. Here are some general notes. --NE2 16:43, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- National Old Trails Road, Los Lunas, NM to Trinidad, CO
- National Park to Park Highway, Pueblo, CO to Denver, CO
- State highways
- NM: 1
- CO: 1, 2, 3
- WY: 11, 30, 13
- SD: 30, 79
- ND: 26, 2
According to AASHTO, US 85 leaves I-25 in the following places
editThis is from the 1989 log, and, as far as I know, Colorado and New Mexico have not submitted any changes to US 85 since then. --NE2 12:51, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- between Albuquerque and Santa Fe: exits 242? to 264? was this an error left over from before this part of I-25 was built in the early to mid-1980s? My 1988 Rand McNally shows that even before the renumbering, US 85 used I-25 north of exit 248.
- Las Vegas: exits 343 to 347 - now Business Loop 25
- Walsenburg: exits 49 to 52 - now Business Loop 25
- Colorado Springs: exits 128 to 148 - still signed as US 85
US 83
editBeing a born and bred Texan and, one who loves to travel our Texas highways, I hate to see one our highways get shorted,(literally), in your article on US 83. Although the TxDOT maintained length is
783.5 miles, another 119.5 miles are maintained by various county and city maintenance crews making it 903 miles north/south and, therefore the longest highway in the state of Texas. (..and I might add, the longest highway across any state in the Continental US, as is *I-10 at 880.5 miles.) To put that 903 miles into perspective for you, if you started out in midtown Manhattan and drove due west as the crow flies you would be in eastern Iowa at 903 miles. I find that astounding. Also if a person just looks at the map accompanying the article, showing US 83 in red, north to south and, I-10 in blue, east to west.. well the eye doesn't lie... you can see that 83 is longer than 10, albeit only 23 miles.(approx.)
