Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Vegetarian Times. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:

Competition

edit

What is missing in this account of Vegetarian Times is the rise of its competitors, who gave them a great deal of loyalty challenge among practicing vegetarians, and the rise of veganism as a very distinct movement that seized animal rights sentiments and purity tendencies. I think historically of Scott Smith's Vegetarian World. The Vegetarian Times publication has responded with a distinct and easily accessible all-vegan interest section in its online version at VegetarianTimes.com[1], perhaps under the leadership of Elizabeth Turner.[2]

When and how did this take place? When did AIM (Active Interest Media) take over VT?[3] Elizabeth Turner had worked as Editor for competitor Natural Health before coming to Vegetarian Times.

Such all-vegan competitors include VegNews of California and the critically far more sophisticated Vegetarian Journal[4] published by the Vegetarian Resource Group in Baltimore, Maryland, and vegetarian competitors were numerous, sophisticated, and glossy. Also, the rise of digital media and online publishing changed the possible fiscal landscape for in-print publishing.

Also, is a separate stub article on Paul Obis warranted? I would think that there is more justification for additional articles about Vegetarian Journal and Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) (which should have its own article, I think), which relies heavily upon vegan registered dietitians and medical doctors, and uses sophisticated observation of businesses working in vegetarian and vegan markets.

Elizabeth Turner seems to be a more interesting character at some point, but Paul Obis led a charge that may not previously have found a mouthpiece in modern America.

I am thinking that a separate, distinct article should be developed around the history of vegetarian publications, first in America, and then (initially in a more general article) for those publications around the world, often mentioned in Vegetarian Times and in publications mentioned by IVU, the International Vegetarian Union. We should look at the articles:

Owler suggests several competitors in the vegetarian lifestyle publishing space.[5]

Online accessibility

edit

How much of Vegetarian Times is currently available online for free? Is it all available at http://VegetarianTimes.com ? That site seems to say that they can sell lifetime access to the issues from 2006-2016 for $59 per account. What about the years from 1974-2004, since VT was founded in 1974? How about the GoogleBooks archive? MaynardClark (talk) 16:19, 7 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
