Merger with West Virginia Route 311
editI propose a merger of this article with WV 311 because the 311 number crosses the state line three times in a short distance. The histories are likely intertwined as well. The title of the new article could be State Route 311 (Virginia – West Virginia), or the WV 311 article could be merged into the VA 311 article, since only 4 miles of the 50+ mile length of the highway in both states is in West Virginia.
- I would have just been bold and done it. --Admrboltz (talk) 03:34, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- I am looking for opinions on how to do it rather than whether it should be done, since it seems like a shoo-in to merge. VC 04:15, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- I don't support a merger. These are distinct routes and merging the articles will mess up naming schemes for the respective states. This is hardly the only case where two states share commonly-numbered routes, or for that matter, a state route extends a US route within the same state. Bitmapped (talk) 19:55, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- It is very rare that a highway of the same number crosses a state line three times. I grant that right now I cannot prove how intertwined their histories are, but I am very confident the history will support merging these routes once it is added in the future. For other examples of such intertwined state highways and how the situation is handled there, please see Route 54 (Delaware-Maryland) and State Route 74 (New York - Vermont). Merging the articles will only mess up naming schemes for the respective states in that one article in each state will be named differently from the others. Virginia State Route 311 and West Virginia Route 311 will redirect to whatever the merged article title is.
- I would also like to point out I spent several hours rewriting the article last night to make it better. While the Lead, infobox, and Major intersections were added/revised for a potential article merger, a Route description existed already and included the West Virginia sections, since it would be hard to describe the Virginia sections fully without at least some mention of the West Virginia sections, and vice versa. If consensus is that the articles should not be merged, then I can remove the merged elements later. I markedly improved this article and you wiped all of the positive changes away just because you disagree with the merger. Please undo your reversion. VC 20:44, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- Support - This is similar to how Route 54 (Delaware–Maryland) are covered in one article due to intertwining between states. In addition, WV 311 is a fairly short road. Dough4872 22:09, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- Support Given how intertwined these highways are, and that it's common practice to merge these sort of highways, there's no reason for this to be an exception. TheCatalyst31 Reaction•Creation 23:53, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
