Move from Wakefield City Council to Wakefield Metropolitan District Council

I have moved all the information from the 'Wakefield City Council' page to this current Wakefield Metropolitan District Council page. My reason for doing so is that the council is not known as 'Wakefield City Council' as the council covers more than the City of Wakefield as it covers the Wakefield District (such as the Five Towns). The WMDC name can be found in legislation and is still the 'full' official title of the council and trades as 'Wakefield Council'. I shall also try and add a few photos of the former logo and current logo. BNC85 (talk) 11:43, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

I have moved this page back to Wakefield Metropolitan District Council once again as it was changed from WMDC to 'Wakefield City Council'. My reasons for doing so are the same as the above when the page was changed in 2012. There have been some updates of the page (notwithstanding the page move) and I have not changed these as they are good updates but as mentioned previously - the authority has never been known as 'Wakefield City Council'. The authority does not cover simply the City of Wakefield itself and the shortened name is simply "trading as" name which most local authorities appear to have done so since the late 1990s / early 2000s (although City of Bradford MDC seems to have bucked this trend and has retained its full title on all public facing documents, publication and vehicle fleet) The new logo was brought in at the time of the shortening of the public facing name however for an interim period the full Wakefield Metropolitan District Council title was used underneath - this has now ceased and the full title has been replaced with 'Working for you' and the addition of the word 'Council' after 'Wakefield'. By reading 'Wakefield Council', it should be read as 'Wakefield [Metropolitan District] Council' and not 'Wakefield City Council' BNC85 (talk) 06:03, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Do we know why the council decided not use "Wakefield City Council" as the name? They are entitled to use it as the letters patent in 1974 granting city status apply to the whole borough. [1] The grant of city status has only two benefits, changing the name of the district to City of Wakefield and the name of the council to Wakefield City Council. It would be good to find a source to confirm why they decided to give up one of the benefits. MRSC (talk) 14:46, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

It's an interesting issue and I'll have a look online when I get a chance. Not sure as to why the local authority didn't go for the Wakefield City Council name and remained for the full WMDC title. I can only imagine that they felt that "Wakefield (Metropolitan) District" would better describe the area rather that "Wakefield City". I would imagine there being some objections from the other areas of the district (such as the five towns of Pontefract, Castleford, Hemsworth, Normanton and Osset) if they used the latter as the authority name? (e.g 'we may be part of the Wakefield District but not the City of Wakefield as such') BNC85 (talk) 11:09, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

In the past, the Council was often described officially as 'City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council', and you can still see that full title on some old signs around the district. That may also be (or have been) the full official name. However, in most references to the Council - including official documents - the words 'City of' were removed, it was just Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, or WMDC. At some point, the Council began trading and operating under the shortened name 'Wakefield Council' - which I assume is purely for branding reasons - but I believe either WMDC or CoWMDC remains the official name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.41.68.103 (talk) 13:22, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
