Anti-whaling page, suggested merger
editI've started a page for anti-whaling to differentiate between the debate here (at Whaling controversy) and the actual actions of anti-whaling protesters. And also to provide a reference link for the term when it's used in other articles. An editor there has suggested that it be merged into this page, altough I don't quite see how. PrBeacon (talk) 11:35, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
- Well for a start there is nothing to merge beyond an unreferenced dictionary definition and some external links of anti whaling organisations (see WP:LINKSPAM) disguised as an article. Polargeo (talk) 11:46, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
- Other content that has been added since the creation of the article falls under content forking. hence the merge proposal. Polargeo (talk) 11:53, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
- And now there is more content and reliable sourcing, though I still have work to do in order to get it up to par, at least. I just added the WP:new page tag so hopefully that should address some of these initial concerns. PrBeacon (talk) 02:47, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed with merger. This looks like a potential WP:COATRACK. If Whaling controversy expands to the point that splitting is needed we should discuss it then.Cptnono (talk) 08:10, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- There is also the following section already in existance Marine conservation activism#Whaling. In fact that might be a far better place to merge to than here. Polargeo (talk) 16:07, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

- I think there is an inherent difference between the controversy page and the anti-whaling page. The controversy page is more concerned with the moral, legal and ideological disagreements over whaling and its methods. An anti-whaling (movement) page is more concerned with documenting the notable aspects of a long history of actions, legal decisions, protests and persons. I think that difference alone precludes merging anti-whaling with whaling controversy. However, Polargeo does make a good point that Marine conservation activism#Whaling has already attempted to do what it appears Anti-whaling is trying to do. Personally I think Anti-Whaling should be renamed Anti-Whaling Movement and built up on the existing scaffold. "An article with a title that can have several meanings, or a term that is used differently in different fields of study, is not a coatrack if it only covers one definition." Cetamata (talk) 18:57, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
More good feedback, thanks again. Replied on other talkpage before seeing this. tbc- PrBeacon (talk) 23:02, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- As Cetamata has said "Marine conservation activism#Whaling has already attempted to do what Anti-whaling is trying to do." I would put it differently as Anti-whaling is attempting to do what Marine conservation activism#Whaling has already done and Anti-whaling is not as yet doing it as well hence it is a classic content fork. It would be better if it had been done as a split when needed. Polargeo (talk) 06:29, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
- Article has improved and I withdraw my merge proposal. With this it now looks like there is a general consensus not to merge so I will work on improving the new article. Polargeo (talk) 07:08, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Article needs to include conservation groups
editThis article really should mention Greenpeace (other than one citation at the bootom) as well as Sea Shepherd & perhaps even the Whale Wars show, as these last two have brought significant attention to the controversy & scrutiny of commercial whaling. PrBeacon (talk) 05:28, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes and the best way of doing that is to merge your new article Anti-whaling into this one. Rather than making more new articles just after this split has been done it is best to improve the current article. Anti-whaling as a subject fits very well under the heading Whaling controversy a WP:CFORK is not useful until this article becomes big enough to need a split. Polargeo (talk) 09:47, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- Note: merger proposal withdrawn. So this article still needs to be improved. I expect to work on it later while I'm contributing to the anti-whaling article but if anyone else wants to help here that would be nice. -PrBeacon (talk) 06:15, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've added a new section (edit) about Conservation groups with a brief description. Please expand on this section if anyone would like to. — RW Marloe (talk) 13:07, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hello, I was wondering about the sources you used to find the information in the conservation groups section. What sources, if any, should or need to be added for the information there? -@Lucanlouwsma (talk) 10:52, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
