Established English Spelling

edit

since "Yun Poson" is not an established english spelling nor known to be preferred by the subject, it seems this article should be titled Yun Bo-seon, per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean). Appleby 22:00, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the "Established English Spelling" would be "Yun Po Sun". see NY Times also in Washington Post 96.224.34.168 (talk) 00:41, 22 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: page moved. I note that the nom doesn't really make a valid case, but I think that might just be language difficulty, user claims only basic English, and the support vote does make a valid case and we have strong consensus to move. Yun PosunYun Po-sun – The hyphenated version is overall more common per this ngrams and is also more in line with WP:NCKO Dantus21 (talk) 22:37, 30 January 2024 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). – robertsky (talk) 22:45, 3 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • The ngrams seem to run neck and neck for the past 15 years, and the title has been discussed in RM discussions before, so I'd recommend a formal discussion here as it may be a WP:PCM.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:57, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
    Hey Amakuru,
You're right that the ngrams have been running neck in neck for the past 15 years. I'm sure not everyone will like "Yun Po-sun" (not everyone can like everything). However, the policy at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean) (see the given name subsection under Romanization) states If there is no personal preference and no established English spelling, hyphenate the syllables, with only the first syllable capitalized (e.g., Hong Gil-dong). "Yun Posun" and "Yun Po-sun" are both even, but the policy states that hyphenation should be used if there isn't an absolute common name. I think Wikipedia policy should take priority over people's preferences, but if you still strongly feel this needs a discussion after reading this, I can start one. This seems like a WP:PCM to me (especially with Talk:Yun_Posun#Requested_move_3_January_2015), so should have a discussion. I have no opinion on the move itself. -Kj cheetham (talk) 22:14, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I should note that Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean) is a guideline, not a policy. -Kj cheetham (talk) 22:16, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
