This template can be used for citations to dictionaries of the Hawaiian language. It provides verifiable sources for several databases that have web access provided by the Ulukau project of the University of Hawaii. The first set are from a number of books published by the University of Hawaii Press. The second set are records from the archives of Hawaii.

Parameters
editFirst parameter is the lemma (generally the word or phrase being looked up). The optional identifier, specified in second position or named parameter id=
can be extracted from the URL of the query, often when there are multiple entries in the dictionary with different diacritics. For example, below id=D10739
was extracted from the entry http://wehewehe.org/gsdl2.85/cgi-bin/hdict?a=d&d=D10739.
A link to entries with diacritics can be created with the parameter q=
. This is to work around incompatibilities between the database software and Wikipedia conventions. For example, the databases seem to use apostrophe instead of the Unicode character for the ʻokina, and the characters for vowels with umlauts instead of macrons for the kahakō. The exact=
parameter can be set to any non-empty value to get an exact match, instead of ignoring diacritics.
The parameter dic=
refers to a specific database and can be extracted from the URL, such as the j=
parameter for the dictionaries. For example, below, http://wehewehe.org/gsdl2.85/cgi-bin/hdict?a=q&q=Halema%CA%BBuma%CA%BBu&j=pp
These database codes include:
- pk: Hawaiian language to English dictionary, based on the 1986 edition ISBN 0824807030 by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel Hoyt Elbert; this is the default
- pp: Place Names of Hawai'i, based on the 1974 edition ISBN ISBN 0824805240 by Mary Kawena Pukui, Samuel Hoyt Elbert and Esther T. Mookini
- cl: Hawaiʻi Place Names, based on the 2002 edition ISBN 0-8248-2451-2 by John R. K. Clark
- mm: Māmaka kaiao: a modern Hawaiian vocabulary : a compilation of Hawaiian words that have been created, collected, and approved by the Hawaiian Lexicon Committee from 1987 through 2000 by ʻAha Pūnana Leo and Hale Kuamoʻo, 2003 edition ISBN 9780824828035
- hpn: Database of early Hawaiian land ownership from archives (Mahele Book); focuses on 19th-century
- gene: Database of marriages, divorces, probates, and naturalization records from archives; these generally need
id=
- royal: Article series on Hawaiian royalty from 1955 Honolulu Advertiser; these generally need
id=
- maui: Article series on Maui royalty from 1956 Honolulu Advertiser; these generally need
id=
Some phrases can be only found with the enabled find derivative spelling option. For this purpose the parameter derivative=
can be set (see example below).
To query the first four databases use: http://wehewehe.org/gsdl2.85/cgi-bin/hdict?l=en&j=p0
For Mahele queries: http://ulukau.org/cgi-bin/hpn?l=en&a=q&h=dtt
For Genealogy Indexes: http://ulukau.org/gsdl2.7/cgi-bin/algene
For the royalty articles: http://ulukau.org/elib/cgi-bin/library?e=d-0sohr-000Sec--11en&a=q&p2=search
For Maui royalty articles: http://ulukau.org/elib/cgi-bin/library?e=d-0somr-000Sec--11en&a=q&p2=search
With parameter id= the parameter dic= will not change the target of the link;[1] for example:
