@Tol: Just wondering why a "show all" and "collapse all" link is needed? The full content is accessible in both states with the only difference being the added max height restriction and vertical scrollbar, similar to the behavior of a browser window. As for printing, a media query is sufficient to print the full table. Jroberson108 (talk) 16:55, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Jroberson108: I don't really know; it was that way before I implemented automatic updating. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 17:04, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I guess I'll assume it isn't needed if no one can give a good reason to keep it. Jroberson108 (talk) 17:15, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I like the "show all/collapse all" links. When expanded the table takes up more vertical height on the screen on the portal page. And it is easier to scroll up and down.
I don't have worry about the mouse accidentally going outside the small collapsed window, and then scrolling the page instead of the window. When the table is expanded I can put the mouse anywhere to scroll. Also I can use my eyes more to scan the table. Instead of also keeping an eye on mouse placement. Since it is only 2 data columns I don't really lose anything by losing the sticky headers when expanded.
Even on tables with more columns I am usually only interested in one or two columns. So I use the expanded table there too. I remember which column has what I want. --Timeshifter (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone else see a need for these links? Jroberson108 (talk) 15:26, 12 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Use mw-collapsible in the template code

edit

I saw a version of this template in Russian Wikipedia and thought that the code it uses is too hacky. There is no need to use inaccessible CSS-based toggles when a standard library for creating collapsible elements exists, and is widely used across Wikipedia. For the demo of how it would look using simpler markup, see current version of the sandbox of this template. It might need some tweaking, but in my opinion it is a far simpler, accessible, and maintainable implementation of the same concept. (The only problem is the toggle not working in no-JS environment, but I think it’s a progressive enhancement anyway.) stjn 21:47, 5 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Stjn: Calling it "hacky" is unnecessary. The CSS was ported over from an older version, which I'm not sure why they implemented a CSS-only solution. The only reason I know of that the toggle was added was so that the entire table could be viewed without a restricted height and scrollbar. Otherwise, the expand/collapse toggle isn't needed since all the content can be accessed by a screen reader or printed in its collapsed and scrollable state, which is different from the show/hide "all" behavior that mw-collapsible intends. Also, mw-collapsible doesn't work on mobile. Jroberson108 (talk) 20:27, 7 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I don’t know much about new/old version, so please don’t take it to mean anything. mw-collapsible doesn’t work on mobile, but should this functionality work on mobile? It’s more of an enhancement anyway. stjn 14:43, 9 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Also, you should consider the fact that the current version of the table is linking to every country article twice for screen reader users (something like ‘European Union link European Union link’ for every row). If it is possible, the flags should be either removed according to WP:DECOR, or at least have no link in them (neither to countries nor to files). stjn 21:52, 5 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Stjn: For European Union, the flag and location text link to two different pages, so I'm not following. There are many related tables that have flags and are managed by various users. See "doc" for a search link on styles usage. Whether the flags should be removed or unlinked from all these tables isn't something for me to decide. Jroberson108 (talk) 20:27, 7 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
They have the same text, which is why I am saying that it is read out like this by screen readers. It is just a MOS:ACCESS concern that I’ve noticed, nothing more. stjn 14:43, 9 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Unorthodox edit request

edit

I realize that this template is only semi-protected, but I am getting a Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBQueryDisconnectedError when I try to sync the template with its sandbox. (The changes remove the padlock template which is handled by {{documentation}} and implement Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2022 July 4#Template:Import-blanktable.) I have tried disabling both my Wikipedia JS/CSS as well as browser extensions, clearing my cache, restarting my computer, logging out and back in, etc. I also tried just making a WP:DUMMY edit; that also failed. I just want to get a someone else to confirm there is indeed a bug preventing editors in general from editing the template before I bother the folks over at phab with a bug report.

Because people who watch Category:Wikipedia semi-protected edit requests are probably not looking to fix templates, I have filed this as a template editor request.

(Reading this over I feel I should clarify that I am requesting that the template be synced with its sandbox.) HouseBlastertalk 06:01, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@HouseBlaster: I also get an error when submitting an edit. A database query error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. @Jroberson108: I have filed phab:T354015. HouseBlastertalk 07:03, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I get the same error when trying, even though I'm an admin. Deactivating this request since there's nothing anyone can do. * Pppery * it has begun... 17:16, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Looking into this further, it appears that the error comes from MediaWiki looking for an identical revision among the template's 90,000. (The template was being updated directly for less than two years, but still has over 10% the edits of WP:Sandbox!)
Of course, there is some underlying bug that needs to be fixed, but in researching I realized that this edit essentially rewrote the template. Would it be possible to WP:HISTSPLIT the earlier history to (e.g.) Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/old? I realize the old version will still be uneditable, but the problem will be at an unused subpage rather than a transcluded template.
Pinging Pppery as you a) are already familiar with the situation and b) would probably be the admin responding to a request at WP:SPLICE ;) HouseBlastertalk 09:42, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Histsplitting tens of thousands of edits is probably harder than just fixing the bug, and I'm not even convinced on its own merit that it's a good idea. The edit you are trying to make here is not at all urgent - just wait for the bug to be fixed and then make it. * Pppery * it has begun... 16:49, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Resolved. The Phabricator task has been closed, and HouseBlaster made an edit to the template. SilverLocust 💬 11:06, 16 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
