This is not a bad idea, but could it be changed to "This category contains albums by [[]]" or This category contains articles on albums by [[]]"? Note that it also look odd for disambiguated artist articles, such as "This category contains Casual (rapper) albums", not that there can anything that can be done with that or should. And what do you think about doing it with an indent in italics?

This category contains articles on albums by [[]].

Finally, a lot of the categories that have been created recently using this template need to be defaultsorted for solo artists. Thanks. --Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars (talk) 09:18, 19 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Extra space

edit

When used like this: {{albums category}}, this template is adding an unnecessary space between the artist name and the full stop - see Category:The Beatles albums for an example. The template code is somewhat complex and I'm concerned that if I try to fix it, I'll break the it. DH85868993 (talk) 02:09, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yep, been like this for a long time. Easy fix though. Rich Farmbrough, 00:28, 20 October 2012 (UTC).Reply

sort key in category

edit

At the moment, if there is a band category, this puts the albums category in it, but the sort key is the band name rather than Albums. Can the sort key in the band/musician category be changed to Albums? I don't know the syntax well enough to attempt this. – Fayenatic London 21:29, 7 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks I've already alerted Rich to this bug--I'll try to fix it myself... —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:17, 7 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
A start This works for everything that lacks {{DEFAULTSORT:''foo''}}, but the latter overrides the template code. —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:57, 8 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that's working fine (I made a null edit to update a test case; presumably this change will eventually be updated automatically). I hadn't thought about overriding DEFAULTSORT, but if that's possible then it would be desirable. – Fayenatic London 09:06, 8 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Bug in Category:Switches albums

edit

Apparently this model categorizes the Category:Switches albums in Category:Switches. I don't know how that works but it is clearly wrong. Calimo (talk) 13:21, 16 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Bug I'm fixing it today. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:45, 16 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

By type

edit

When you use the "type" option ({{albums category|type=live}}, for example), the category description reads:

  • This category contains albums by Foo live.

"Foo live" is being wikilinked doing it this way. Can the template be modified so when you use the "type" option the description will read:

  • This category contains live albums by Foo.

The EP type would have to be different so it displays as EPs and not EP albums. Thanks. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 18:32, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Debugging I've been working with Rich Farmbrough on this and I have a lot of ideas how to make this template more flexible. One of several things to do is to make this template work better with compilation, EP, live, remix, soundtrack, and video albums. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:37, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
OK, great! I guess it can also automatically include Category:Foo albums in the various album types when using the "type" parameter the way the main albums category gets placed in Category:Foo (when it exists). But it sounds like you've got a handle on it then, and I will let you and Rich do what you think needs to be done. Thanks. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 18:51, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
edit

I've added a feature which automatically adds a "See also Category:FOO songs" link to the header when such a category exists where FOO is the same in both categories. However, is there a way to have this not appear if it has already been added manually? My adding it has created some categories with it listed twice. I am in the process of going through and removing the duplicates, but it would be easier of course if it was automatically suppressed if already there. I'm not an expert coder at all. Never mind. A user has objected to my adding this, so I've removed it. It did seem like a good idea to me, because it added many hundreds of not-yet created links to appropriate songs categories, but the user is concerned about the inability to add other "see also"s to same line as the auto added one. HTML in category name bug

edit

When this template is used on eg Category:Secos & Molhados albums it incorrectly says that the category is empty, thanks to the way magic words handle HTML characters. Replacing

{{#ifeq:{{PAGESINCATEGORY:{{PAGENAME}}}}|0|
with
{{#ifeq:{{PAGESINCATEGORY:{{#titleparts:{{PAGENAME}}}}}}|0|
on the first line of {{Albums category/core}} should fix it. Le Deluge (talk) 12:41, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Le Deluge: That left a floating }} on a new linebreak but did fix the empty problem. Sorry, that was ungrateful: thank you for the fix!Justin (koavf)TCM 15:04, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Circular categorisation

edit

This template puts certain categories, such as Category:Roberto Carlos (singer) EPs and Category:Albums produced by Shane Nicholson (singer) inside themselves. I can't work out why; and the template doc is of no help. Is there a missing parameter? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:11, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Redrose64: I've fixed the two examples you mentioned. In each case the first "<article name>" parameter was missing. DH85868993 (talk) 23:11, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, but the doc isn't clear on why that is necessary. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:56, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I did some experimentation and it seems to be the case that if the display parameter is specified then the <article name> parameter must also be specified or else the category ends up inside itself. I agree that the template doc doesn't explicitly say that (and it seems to conflict with the statement that "The article name should only be specified if it is different from that in the category name.") DH85868993 (talk) 00:53, 11 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
It's also only to be used for "Foo albums" categories in which Foo is a musician or group and will automatically be placed in Category:Albums by artist. EPs must be designated as such using the "type" parameter. The template shouldn't be used in "albums by producer" categories. Thanks. Remove hatnote from the template

edit

Change

{{hatnote|This category contains albums...}}

to

This category contains albums...

It is not really a hat note but simply a description of the category. Hatnotes' purpose is "to help readers locate a different article if the one they are at is not the one they're looking for." This is not what this description is. Mitar (talk) 10:12, 3 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit template-protected}} template. There appear to be similar templates with this format, so consistency is a consideration. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 20:08, 4 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
