Why does this template only apply to lists?
editThere doesn't seem to be a template for redirects from non-notable characters to the notable works in which they occur, where the target specifically mentions the character despite being about the work as a whole rather than just a list of characters.
Are such redirects meant not to be categorized, or perhaps meant not to exist at all? Other users and I have had attempts to use this template for such a purpose reverted. (I don't mean to forum-shop; just trying to get some second/third opinions.)
Should {{r from character}}
become a new template of its own? Should that redirect be RFD'd in the meantime? Or something else entirely? --SoledadKabocha (talk) 02:44, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- It applies to any character list, but that list need not be a standalone one, so like a character list embedded in a film article is an appropriate target. But this is where it is expected that the target goes more into just name-drop of the character in the target (eg a minor character mentioned once, or just listed as "Character, played by X" and nothing more - neither case should use this.) --MASEM (t) 15:30, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- So what category should have been used? Or are such redirects practically uncategorizable? (In the Alexander Hartdegen -> TTM2002 case, I intentionally had the redirect pointing to the top of the article rather than the character list section, due to the obvious mentions of the protagonist's name in the plot section.) --SoledadKabocha (talk) 17:24, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- I think the point here is that if there is content in the target article which actually contains information about the redirected subject, it can be used. But as Mansem said, a minor character's name redirected to the main article which does not even mention him is not a good thing. Blake (Talk·Edits) 21:25, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
Extra text
editI've just noticed that this template is now placing the text "[[Category:]]" below the message "This is a redirect from a fictional character to a list of characters." Does this have some function or is it an error/leftover bit from an old edit?— TAnthonyTalk 18:57, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
- I am unable to duplicate what you describe. Where did you notice this? – Paine Ellsworth CLIMAX! 23:02, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
- OK, for example the very first link on Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:CharR_to_list_entry is Knight Sabers, I see the text "[[Category:]]" come up randomly on the redirect page. Do you see it? I can't imagine it's something in my settings causing it.— TAnthonyTalk 23:41, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
- Nope, it's not your settings. I see it, too. It's going to take some digging, because the extra text does not show up on the testcases page. It obviously has something to do with the cat parsers in the second "Redirect template". Thank you for the good catch! I'll be workin' on it, boss! Category population error
editAll of a sudden, this template is now populating both the intended sub-category (e.g. Category:Star Trek character redirects to lists) and the parent category, Category:Fictional character redirects to lists. Somethin' break? — Cbbkr (talk) 23:44, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- To editor Cbbkr: That is hopefully fixed, now. Are you okay with its present cat populations? – Paine Ellsworth CLIMAX! 04:51, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
Requested move

The result of the move request was: moved. WP:SWAP also performed as there was non-trivial history at the proposed target and I wasn't sure whether it needed to be preserved. Jenks24 (talk) 07:44, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Template:R to character list entry → Template:R from fictional character – This template was functionally merged with a similar one but is not presently at the correct name per the consensus decision at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2014 April 10#Template:R from character. --Relisted. Two auto-populated categories
editWhy do we have both Category:Fictional character redirects to lists (with 72 subcats and 151 pages) Category:Redirected fictional character articles (with 5651 pages). Is it the function of the latter to provide a flat view of all the pages in the former tree?
Evidently this template {{R from fictional character}} populates both, absent parameters. We say that here in text and also at the two categories in template messages.
Whatever the rationale for A and B, it is unreasonable that C: documentation section 1 Purpose refers only to the former; section 2 Usage only to the latter.

- Thank you for the above! Tweaked the /doc a bit to meet your concerns and to correct one or two glaring errors (probably my own from previous updates). Thank you again for helping to improve these templates. Joys! – Paine EllsworthCLIMAX! 19:24, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
Redirected fictional character articles category
editI presume this category is from when loads of fictional character articles were merged and redirected, but what about new redirects? Should they be noincluded from it somehow or should I not even be using this template on new ones? —Xezbeth (talk) 06:40, 23 July 2017 (UTC)
- To editor Xezbeth: as far as I can tell, any and all fictional character redirects that target lists or works of fiction are in this category, new and old. Paine Ellsworth put'r there 16:11, 11 August 2017 (UTC)
- That's fine, but it automatically puts the redirect in Category:Redirected fictional character articles. A newly created redirect technically shouldn't be in there, but maybe it's not important enough to worry about. —Xezbeth (talk) 16:58, 11 August 2017 (UTC)
- I see your point. I suppose one school of thought might be that many of the characters redirected are potential articles. Perhaps it would be less confusing if the cat were renamed to Category:Redirects from fictional characters? Paine Ellsworth put'r there 15:16, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
- For the record, this was agreed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2018 November 6. – Fayenatic London 12:52, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Adding (series) or (franchise)
editI have tweaked this template to add "(series)" or "(franchise)" when building the category name. This saves us from editing all the redirects individually when categories are renamed to include one of these disambiguators.
@Gonnym:
- will it be useful to add other disambiguators, e.g. "(film series)", "(video game series)"?
- would you like to add this functionality into related templates?
– Fayenatic London 12:46, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- I'm trying to think if this can incorrectly categorize pages. If I can't find issues then this can work for the other related templates. --Gonnym (talk) 13:18, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
Why is the category autopopulated suffixed "to lists"?
editIs this not supposed to be used on non-list redirects? I see the #Why does this template only apply to lists? section above, but I don't think that applies anymore, given I think there was a merge afterwards? Skarmory (talk • contribs) 01:20, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- It used to be a template called Template:Redirect to character list entry which was later moved to this title. You are correct that this does not apply only to lists and the only reason the categories still say "to lists" is because tagging all the current categories for a rename is a pain and we don't want to have 2 different naming styles. Template:R from fictional location was the only one that completed it so far. Gonnym (talk) 07:16, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
The House of the Dead
editI would like to propose that Category:The House of the Dead character redirects to lists and its parameter are removed from this template. There is only one redirect in the category, and I doubt it will ever get much bigger. There is no point in keeping it. QuicoleJR (talk) 21:49, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- Nominate the category for deletion over at WP:CFD and they will take care of it. --Trialpears (talk) 15:45, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, OK. Thanks. QuicoleJR (talk) 15:51, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
