Recent modifications included not just extensions to the template, but incompatible changes that broke a number of pages which are using this template. Perhaps the recent changes were necessary, but as a matter of procedure, it might be good to have some discussion first.

Regarding the specifics of the current revision, I think it is too simplistic. The template seems to suggest that there is a neat correspondence between the reigning person, the name of their reign or era, dynasties, etc. This is often the case, but not always. For example: the Zhengtong Emperor and the Tianshun Emperor of the Ming Dynasty are the same person and the dates of his reign are not contiguous; before the Ming, many emperors used more than one era name, e.g. Tang Gao Zong more than a dozen; Hong Taiji ruled both the Later Jin dynasty and the Qing dynasty; etc. If the template should be applicable to all Chinese emperors (perhaps that not possible, though), some flexibility and greater generality is required. --MarkSweep 05:02, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Discussion occurred at Wikipedia talk:History standards for China-related articles. I think we will ultimately have to make one for each dynasty (clan name in Qing should be family name in Ming even if the naming conventions for Ming/Qing emperors is the same {era name} Emperor).--Jiang 21:34, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Update

edit

I've updated the code of this template and added parser functions. All fields are included in this template and are entirely optional, so there is no longer any need to maintain half a dozen variants. PC78 21:55, 27 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Multiple reigns

edit

Can someone implement a way to have allow the template to handle an emperor who reigned multiple (interrupted) times? (E.g., Emperor An of Jin, Emperor Ruizong of Tang.) --Nlu (talk) 01:59, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
