Design
editA better design here would be to have the vb
parameter add the category, and dispense with the notaref
parameter. In the interests of backward compatibility though, notaref
is retained and the addition of the category is not coupled with the use of vb
. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 20:56, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
I also added a notvb
parameter which behaves like notaref
and would also be excluded in a design where backward compatibility was not a concern. It just allows for better mnemonics. It is applied in situations where information is being used, but not inserted verbatim. The use of notaref
would look odd in these situations. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 17:54, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Albigence Waldo Putnam
editI know @PBS: you feel a need to require wstitle
for these sorts of templates, and I can accept this, but you need to put a bot to work to fix the existing usage that you break. For example, I have just fixed Albigence Waldo Putnam. Please. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 17:01, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Bob Burkhardt, I think you are mistaken. The article Albigence Waldo Putnam before you edited it had a working
{{Appletons'}}
template see Revision as of 16:32, 16 November 2017 what you did (diff) was change the template from{{Appletons'}}
to{{cite Appletons'}}
removing the author link and adding an unnecessary vb parameter ({{Appletons'}}
defaults to including the attribution prefix,{{cite Appletons'}}
does not). -- PBS (talk) 17:02, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
- @PBS:, Looks like I am. I was responding to a thank, and found {{Cite Appletons'}} with an unused text error with the title text in red, and did an edit to fix it. When I look at that edit it does a whole bunch of other things, and I think I must have inadvertently been editing an old version. Sorry for the mix up. - @Bob Burkhardt, easily done.
- The last set of edits I did to articles using
{{Appletons'}}
and{{cite Appletons'}}
using my PBS-AWB account (I use that account for semi-automated edits) was to alter theauthor=
parameter to two or three three separate parameters (in this case "author=[[John Fiske (philosopher)|John Fiske]]
" to "last=Fiske |first=John |authorlink=John Fiske (philosopher)
". Not only is this the recommended format in HELP:CS1#Authors, it also means that "Fisk" can be linked in short citations to the{{Appletons'}}
template using the{{harvnb}}
type templates (as they are now). -- PBS (talk) 14:22, 19 November 2017 (UTC)- @PBS:, No bot attention is needed at this point to my knowledge. Thanks for your attention to this article. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 15:49, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
