Change http to https for the template. The website already redirects people that land on it from the http to the https version so the template may as well default to the desired https. Jeanjung212 (talk) 19:19, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

How about enabling the use of the hyphenated name "access-date" for a parameter, in addition to "accessdate", as has been done with (most?) other 'cite' templates? A similar change for "entry-date" might be considered as well. —ADavidB 03:34, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Error message on the first line
editDear fellow editors,
I consulted this template for the first time today, and noticed that the very first line has an error message, in red, about the "|id=" parameter. Could someone please explain why it’s there, and might this be something that needs to be fixed? I’ve not seen this at the top of a template before and it seems odd. Thank you.
With kind regards,
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!) 11:35, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
- I request they fix this by wrapping the template itself in includeonly tags, but they said you and I are whiners. “ Template-protected edit request on 16 Jan 2015” AManWithNoPlan (talk) 13:23, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

- @Pdebee: and @AManWithNoPlan: thanks for drawing attention to this problem. It was also putting the template into the hidden Category:Articles with incorrect citation syntax, and who knows what else. Hopefully, it is fixed now. Funandtrvl (talk) 00:06, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

italicization
editWhen transcluded, why does this template italicize Geographic Names Information System when our own page doesn't? — Fourthords | =Λ= | 15:52, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- It's following the format of {{cite web}}, which italicizes names of websites in references. — hike395 (talk) 16:24, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- Shouldn't Geographic Names Information System be put in the
|publisher=
equivalent, rather than|website=
? Seeing as it's not supposed to be italicized? — Fourthords | =Λ= | 18:48, 5 June 2021 (UTC)- Because Geographic Names Information System (a gazetteer or geographical dictionary) is the work of United States Geological Survey which is the publisher. In cs1 (
{{cite gnis}}
is a wrapper template that uses{{cite web}}
, a cs1 template), the source's 'work' is italicized. - Given that gnis is a gazetteer,
{{cite web}}
is probably not quite the correct template to be used here. Instead, this template should probably use{{cite dictionary}}
(a redirect to{{cite encyclopedia}}
),|entry=
, and|dictionary=Geographic Names Information System

- I implemented Trappist's idea in the sandbox. See the testcases: it doesn't change the formatting, only the metadata. What do other editors think of this change? — hike395 (talk) 06:09, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- this link to the testcases: testcases.
- The testcases show a mismatch between the live and sandbox renderings because of differences in the html output and consequent differences in the citation metadata. For example, each cs1|2 is rendered in
<cite>...</cite>
tags with different attributes:<cite class="citation web cs1">
<cite class="citation encyclopaedia cs1">

- If we're not changing the formatting (i.e. it should be italicized), then should our article on the subject use italics, too? — Fourthords | =Λ= | 17:05, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- Perhaps; but this template talk page is not the venue for that discussion.

- I suspect the article title should be italicized, similar to Nature (journal) or Encyclopaedia Britannica. — hike395 (talk) 01:19, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

USGS update
editThe new GNIS database is up and working, but the template doesn't take you to the new database. Was wondering who could fix it? -420Traveler (talk) 13:21, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
Fixed --- Thanks for keeping track of this! Note that only domestic names are working, and that the elevation in the new database output appears to be broken. — hike395 (talk) 02:44, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- Later: The USGS appears to have fixed the elevation issue. — hike395 (talk) 01:37, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
