Parser order

I modified the parsing order for the parameters to prefer named over unnamed. The reason for this is adding a trailing pipe on the citation was causing failure, since {{{1}}} was being prefered over {{{vnum}}} (see [1]). 134.253.26.12 (talk) 16:16, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Change of URL

Hey, I've noticed that the URLs are completely different right now on volcano.si.edu, with the current template pointing to 404 or to the initial page. See for instance: https://volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=241816 --Ruthven (msg) 17:58, 25 December 2017 (UTC)

vtab parameter?

What about adding a "vtab" parameter so references can go straight to the tab rather than leaving it to the reader to figure out what tab the sourced information is coming from? Otherwise, I've seen the links hardcoded and avoid using this template. RedWolf (talk) 03:21, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

I have added support for the vtab parameter. It only works when specifying the "vn". For now, people will need to modify the name to include the name of the vtab. RedWolf (talk) 20:49, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

There should probably be a list of all the tab names so users don't have to figure out what they are to use the "vtab" parameter. See the following:

What name is used for the parameter to link to the "General Information" tab? I've tried "General" and "Information" but neither one works. The template itself generally links to the "General Information" tab automatically but this isn't always the case. For example, "Lassen Volcanic Center". Global Volcanism Program. To elucidate what Trappist is saying, above: any parameter accepted by {{cite web}} is also accepted by {{cite gvp}}, including |archive-url=,|archive-date=, and |url-status=. Does that meet your needs, Volcanoguy? — hike395 (talk) 00:16, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Yes, but that's not exactly what I meant. {{Cite gvp}} currently lists three parameters: |vn=, |vtab= and |name=. I understand {{cite gvp}} already claims the template accepts all parameters that {{cite web}} accepts but wouldn't it be helpful to list all {{cite web}} parameters that are relevant to {{cite gvp}}? Lots of the {{cite web}} parameters are useless to {{cite gvp}} and listing all the relevant parameters on {{cite gvp}} would save time for users who have to look through a long list of irrelevant parameters at {{cite web}}. I documented |archive-date=, but I went one step further. I wrote a little bit of code where an editor only has to specify |archive-date= and the template fills in a link to archive.org .. no need to understand how GVP works. For example:

Add doi?

Volcanoes of the World now has a doi. As it's a stable identifier, it may be useful to add it. Version 4 is doi:10.5479/si.GVP.VOTW4-2013; version 5 (current) is doi:10.5479/si.GVP.VOTW5-2022.5.0. Cheers, BlackcurrantTea (talk) 07:01, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

Italicization "Global Volcanism Program"?

Greetings and felicitations. Since "Global Volcanism Program" isn't italicized in its own Wikipedia article, shouldn't it be in roman type here, too? (I would use the |department= field.) —DocWatson42 (talk) 05:44, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure that the formatting of the article title is that relevant, because CS1 follows its own formatting rules. It seems to me that the website is named "Global Volcanism Program", so {{cite web}} wants it to be italic. From the main GVP web page, it appears that the department is "Department of Mineral Sciences - National History Museum". We could add this, if editors think it is useful, but that would not remove italics from "Global Volcanism Program". I would think that keeping the COinS metadata correct is an important criterion. — hike395 (talk) 05:54, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

While it's apparently not documented in {{Cite web}} or CS1, my understanding is that the department field is not for academic departments, but for intermediate sized works, such as are documented in The Chicago Manual of Style 17th Ed., §8.177 "Articles stories, chapters, and so on." (pp. 533–534):

Titles of regular departments or columns in periodicals are set in roman with no quotation marks (see also 14.190, 14.195).

The relevant sections are "Magazine departments", p. 838 (in the hardcover), and "Regular departments or features" p. 841. This is the sort of thing covered by MOS:NEITHER. I suggest this because I don't understand why something that is not italicized in an article is italicized in a citation. |department= is for periodical citations and is documented at Template:Cite journal#csdoc department and at Template:Cite magazine#csdoc department.
