Values from instances of this template have been copied to Wikidata, and transclusions in external links sections have had the migrated values removed. No changes to visible article text were made. If the template has a name parameter, that may also have been removed, making use of {{PAGENAMEBASE}} instead. (20 September 2016) |
Initial add
editI've populated this template across our articles (where they existed) from the list of EOL's 25 exemplar species pages, and a handful of others. I've also listed it at Wikipedia:Template messages/Links#Miscellaneous. That should get the ball rolling :) -- Quiddity (talk) 07:52, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Wording
editDo we need the "Infomation about ..." part of the link? Most of the other Category:External link templates don't seem to use that convention (with exceptions such as {{Domínio Público author}}). I'm going to boldly remove it, but please revert me if there is a good reason to keep it. -- Quiddity (talk) 07:52, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Broken
edit/taxa/ are now /pages/ on the EoL website. Can someone fix? StevePrutz (talk) 15:27, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- The numbers have changed too - http://www.eol.org/taxa/17128463 gets redirected to http://www.eol.org/pages/1044544. However they seem to have working redirects for them all(?). Can you spot any instances where the links don't work? I tried 4 random links, and all seemed to redirect properly to the new location. (Possibly they had momentary problems whilst changing over, that you encountered?). Thanks for the heads-up though :) -- Quiddity (talk) 18:31, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hmmm, this does however make it impossible to add new links...
- I'm going to request a bot programmer to fix our existing links to the new target numbers, so that we can change the way the template works without breaking the old links. -- Quiddity (talk) 19:46, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Update and Creative Commons
editI'm updating the template to comply with EOL's citation style. I'm also adding wording that will hopefully satisfy the Creative Commons Attribution component so we can copy CC-BY and CC-BY-SA material (but NOT CC-BY-NC) verbatim from EOL into Wikipedia. -kslays (talk • contribs) 19:07, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- The terms of use require that the citation include the full article title, e.g. "Pogonomyrmex anergismus Cole, 1954." Any web developers or programmers want to attempt to automatically pull the title from the EOL article? That would be wonderful! -kslays (talk • contribs) 19:43, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- Also, I can't get the date to work, see my edit history of the template. We need to add " Accessed {{#time: d M Y}}. " after the URL, but have it be fixed to when the template was added to the species article page. -kslays (talk • contribs) 19:51, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- Even better, I think we should make this the same style as Template:wikispecies, so it can stack right below it. Here is a high resolution icon and low-res version to go with it. -kslays (talk • contribs) 20:20, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
- Only official sister-projects get the box design. Otherwise everyone would want one for their favored resource! ;) -- Quiddity (talk) 23:28, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

- The problem with this is that this template is for use in the external links, not references, section, so changing to a citation style is inappropriate in this context. However, if a template:eol-citation (whatever) is created, then citation style formatting would be appropriate. —Eekerz (t) 01:27, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
- What he said. Sorry I didn't notice this faster. I've reverted. A new EOL citation template should definitely be created though. -- Quiddity (talk) 07:33, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'd create the template myself, but I cannot figure out how to code the dates correctly? Does the template need to be substituted or something? I see references have them automatically added for website citations - can we do this for EOL? Also, is there any way to automatically pull the EOL title/name/date? Here is their example followed by my attempt at coding it:

"Pogonomyrmex anergismus Cole, 1954." Encyclopedia of Life, available from http://eol.org/pages/460427. Accessed 15 Jan 2009.
[http://eol.org/pages/{{{1}}} "{{{2}}}."] [[Encyclopedia of Life]], available from http://eol.org/pages/{{{1}}}. Accessed {{#time: d M Y}}. This Wikipedia article may include [[Creative Commons]] licensed content from the Encyclopedia of Life.
- The easiest way, would be to copy and hack the code from another template. I would pick something from either Category:Specific-source templates or Category:Attribution templates. Something like Template:Citizendium perhaps, seems closest? Let me know what template title seems preferable (eg {{EOLcite}} or {{from EOL}} or something else), and we can move this discussion there, where we can poke at code together. :) -- Quiddity (talk) 23:28, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

As it stands the template outputs the format
- entry at the Encyclopedia of Life
which is in contradiction of MOS:ITALICTITLE and MOS:QUOTETITLE. Were they followed, the output would be
- "entry" at the Encyclopedia of Life
(The Encyclopedia of Life article already italicizes its title.) Would someone please be so kind as to fix this? —DocWatson42 (talk) 00:49, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Primefac, MusikAnimal, Zyxw, and JJMC89: Pardon me, but you four are the most recent editors of this template, though that was (for the most recent) over a year ago. Would one of you please be so kind as to take the time to fix the problem? —DocWatson42 (talk) 01:48, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

EOL's site supports HTTPS. Can we change the URL from http://www.eol.org/pages/...
