Rename "Taco Chains"

edit

Do you think "Taco Chains" should be renamed "Mexican Chains?" Many of them sell much more than just Tacos. I know many burger chains sell much more than just burgers, but some of the chains in this list are much more well-known for their burritos than for their tacos. --Toadaron (talk) 21:08, 10 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

How about Tex-Mex? Most are not really Mexican, but Texican. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 21:42, 10 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
One of the earlier edits didn't think Tex-Mex was a proper phrase, which is incorrect. But anyway, I've changed it to "Mexican-style food" which is more inclusive. 98.197.249.31 (talk) 06:44, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mexican-Style vs. Tex-Mex

edit

Mexican-style food is not restricted to just pure Mexican food. I would argue that Tex-Mex (which is of course itself distinct from Mexican food) is a subcategory of Mexican-style food. "Mexican-style" is, basically, defined as "Mexican cuisine outside of Mexico" in Wiki's own article about it, so I think it's more broadly inclusive than just Tex-Mex. Also, if you follow the links to a number of the restaurants listed, they are described as serving Mexican-style food instead of Tex-Mex. I think it would be better to categorize these restaurants as Mexican-Style rather than Tex-Mex. 98.197.249.31 (talk) 18:13, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Most of the brands are not Mexican, but Tex-Mex even though they claim to be Mexican. The foods these chains serve does not resemble real Mexican food. What many in the United States consider to be Mexican is in fact Texican. Read the Tex-Mex article and you will see this.--Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 20:46, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm well aware of the difference between Mexican and Tex-Mex foods (check my IP's location if you wish). What I'm saying is that the addition of the "-style" modifier makes "Mexican-style" useful as a descriptor of the pseudo-Mexican food served in these fast food chains, especially since they're not all that authentically Tex-Mex either. 98.197.249.31 (talk) 20:54, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
They're more Texican than even pseudo-Mexican. Tacos in Mexico barely resemble those in the US, the burritos aren't even close. I know a beautiful Mexican woman and the real Mexican food she makes is nothing like the the stuff found in these restaurants. They are Tex-Mex, not Mexican style. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 06:34, 18 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I feel like we're talking past each other. IMO, "Mexican-style" doesn't mean "in the style of Mexico" (or "replicating real Mexican food," if you will). Rather, it means food influenced by and descended from Mexican traditions but also incorporating local influences and ingredients. In the United States, these regional variants would include Tex-Mex, Sonoran Mexican, and Cal-Mex. "Mex-ish" probably gets the idea across better, except that's not a real word. Additionally, the burrito-centric restaurants (Chipotle, Freebirds, and Qdoba) serve fare that's more Cal-Mex than Tex-Mex, so it isn't entirely accurate to use "Tex-Mex" as the category heading here, either. 98.197.249.31 (talk) 16:54, 18 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fast casual restaurants

edit

Apparently, a few fast casual restaurants such as Chipotle Mexican Grill, Five Guys, and Quiznos are also included on this navbox. Therefore, I have clarified the title bar to now read "Fast food and fast casual restaurant chains". Zzyzx11 (talk) 05:50, 14 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm also doing this to prevent misunderstandings such as this edit. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (talk) 05:55, 14 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think this is a great edit but I think there should also be a row in the template actually called "Fast Casual" for chains like Panera Bread, Atlanta Bread, Bruegger's, Newk's Eatery, Corner Bakery Cafe, Potbelly, and a few others. These chains don't fit into their current groups particularly well and are quite different from some of the others in those groups. Could also call the row "Cafés" or possibly "Bakery Cafés". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Southrunner10 (talkcontribs) 06:09, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Smashburger is an up-and-coming hamburger fast food restaurant chain.

edit

I think that Smashburger should be included in the template for Fast-food chains of the United States. I've tried to add it to the template, but for some reason, Wikipedia won't let me. Any reason for this? Mr. Brain (talk) 01:45, 6 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Culver's like Dairy Queen

edit

Culver's should probably be listed like Dairy Queen in both desserts and burgers instead of just desserts. In fact, unlike DQ where some locations only have desserts, all Culver's sell burgers. As such, it would make more sense for Culver's to be listed under burgers (which it isn't) than DQ (which is listed in both categories)--2601:1C2:1300:1F33:8C08:982:A142:8620 (talk) 21:39, 28 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Can someone add Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers to the template {{Fast-food chains of the United States}}? This business currently meets the requirements for this template by having over 300 restaurants that are located within at least 30 states since March 2018. Since the company sells both burgers (under group1) and frozen desserts (under group5), it qualifies for inclusion in both subsections. Thanks. -- 147.202.209.1 (talk) 23:43, 4 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

How strict is the requirement for chains needing a minimum of 100 locations to be allowed inclusion on this template?

edit

The rules for this template state that This template should only include chains that are national or are in a sizable region with more than 100 locations. Please do not add regional chains that have only a few locations in a couple of states.

I have noticed that at 01:00, 16 December 2018‎, User:ADMRN9102 had added recently added Tasty Made and ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen to the section of defunct chains. At its height ShopHouse had a maximum of 15 locations while Tasty Made had only a single location during its entire lifespan. Can a company with a single location be considered a chain? Although ShopHouse with locations on both east and west coast, is 15 locations close enough to the 100 location threshold to warrant inclusion on this template? -- 64.134.164.33 (talk) 23:52, 9 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have noticed that someone recently (at 22:00, 23 December 2018‎) added Jollibee to the list, but Jollibee only has 39 locations in the United States so it appears that the requirement of having over 100 locations is just ignored by most editors. -- 50.195.200.161 (talk) 01:52, 17 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

BBQ and Italian chains

edit

Since L&L Hawaiian Barbecue isn't exactly Asian food, it should go under a new category, Barbecue, along with other BBQ fast food and fast casual places such as Dickey's and Smithfield's. Also, Fazoli's and Sbarro should go under another new category, Italian, along with Little Caesar's, which is definitely fast food (you tell them what pizza you want, they hand it to you right away, you pay, and you leave). Thoughts? Greggens (talk) 03:17, 26 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Categorization of Dunkin' Donuts

edit

The comment in the template says that Dunkin' Donuts should not be listed with the other donut shops because it is primarily a coffee shop. I'm not sure that's the best placement. It still sells donuts and other pastries in more than 11,000 shops worldwide. (Duck Donuts is listed, but it has under 100 locations.) Dunkin' Donuts also sells sandwiches, tea, iced drinks, bagels, and other pastries. In addition, their donuts are sold in several major grocery chains and other outlets. Krispy Kreme has a similar combination of pastries and drinks, but is still listed under donuts. So, I think it's incorrect to list Dunkin' Donuts under coffee. The corporation wants to rebrand with an emphasis on drinks, but the category on Wikipedia shouldn't change just to match a company's advertising strategy. Perhaps there should be a category for the "pastry & coffee", "light breakfast", or "Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs)"? I still expect to find them under donuts, not coffee, what do you think? (I have no affiliation with DD, but I have eaten their donuts.) -RobinLampert (talk) 05:09, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

In the defunct category, Zantigo is listed. This is incorrect. More information can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zantigo or zantigo.com 2601:446:8200:A9C0:85E2:6F30:4553:9312 (talk) 21:34, 13 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. The article at Zantigo also appears to lack reliable sources for this. Unfortunately, Zantigo.com is a primary source, and does not substantively declare the current status of the chain, even if we were to accept it. The article reads that the chain has gone from some 82 restaurants to 4 under the newly-opened entity. Given that, I am not certain that it would qualify as a fast food chain for the purpose of this template, and some might consider it defunct still, especially as it only exists in one state. If you have a better source, please feel free to resubmit this.  A S U K I T E  22:05, 13 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Concerns over certain inclusions

edit

Many chains featured on this list don't seem to fit the description of fast food or even fast casual. Examples of this, and similar ones on the list, are entries like P. F. Chang's, Texas Roadhouse, Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden, and Rainforest Cafe. Just because these are popular, medium-priced, American chains does not mean they should count as fast food or fast casual. The major deciding factor that makes a chain fast food/casual is the main way of receiving food being counter service or paying before receiving food.

While pick-up options are available at these restaurants, allowing you to pay first, it is not their main form of service. When you dine at these restaurants you are sat at a table and given table service, something that makes a chain casual dining/sit-down. I believe chains like these should be removed from the list. Popeetoes (talk) 20:00, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Seems chains like these were added not too long ago, probably in error. The guidelines should be more specific about which types of restaurants qualify for this list. MrBatteryBrain (talk) 21:27, 19 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Can someone remove Happi House and Manila Sunset from group1 (Asian)? Neither chains never exceeded a dozen locations. (Manila Sunset has been removed from this template multiple times.)

Can someone remove Stonefire Grill from group10 (Mexican / Tex-Mex)? Stonefire Grill appears to be an extremely small regional chain with only 12 locations within two California counties.

Can someone remove Claim Jumper, Gen Korean BBQ, Rocklands Barbeque and Grilling Company, Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q, and Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse from group3 (Barbecue)? Rocklands has exactly 4 locations in the DC metro area. Claim Jumper appears never to have exceeded 15 locations. Gen Korean BBQ has yet to reach 40 locations. Smithfield is located in a single state with ~40 locations. Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse only has 4 locations.

Can someone remove Patxi's Chicago Pizza, Pizza My Heart (restaurant), Romano's Macaroni Grill, Uncle Maddio's Pizza Joint, and We, the Pizza from group11 (Pizza / Italian)? All of those do not exceed 40 units, some as few as 12.

Can someone remove Rainforest Cafe from group15 (Other)? Rainforest has not exceeded 30 units.

Not sure why some editors keep adding these insignificant chains that do not meet the minimal standards. Are better instructions needed to be added to the template?

It is time to check more sections for items inserted by editors who are unable to read instructions concerning the 100 location threshold (and I'm only including the ones than has not exceeded 60 in the present or even 80 in the verifiable past.)

(I don't know what to do about the repeat offenders who keep including the same chains that were removed in the past that have not increased their number of locations since the previous removal.)

Can someone remove 7 Leaves Cafe, Argo Tea, Colectivo Coffee Roasters, Heine Brothers', Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea from group4 (Beverages)?

  • 7 Leaves Cafe was removed once before for having only 43 locations. The company's website only list 43 locations in four states (zoom out on map to view relative locations on map, while list view displays addresses of all locations in viewable map).
  • Argo Tea had at most 40-50 locations in the past, but currently has 8. (It also previous had products sold in thousands of supermarkets in the past, but should not be included for this list.) See citations about the company's acquisition by Planting Hope in 2023.

Can someone remove Randy's Donuts from group2 (Baked goods)?

  • Randy's Donuts's website does not list more than 25 locations in the United States and less than a total of 50 worldwide. No mention of the company being larger in the past. (The main location is famous for being easily visible from airplanes landing at LAX and might also be visible in some satellite photos.)

  • Burgerim is a weird case. The owner of the company is a crook who recent fled the country after some federal warrants were issued against him. The company's website appears to have permanently gone offline. No news of a bankruptcy filing. No news that fines levied by recent federal default judgements against the company are being paid. There are no company-owned locations. All locations were operated by franchisees who were defrauded. Are there any franchise location still in business? Unknown. Unable to find anything via Google other than various Yelp reviews stating that franchises in any giving city has closed. The closest thing I found is this March 2024 article. There is also a recent article in the American edition of the British tabloid The Sun (United Kingdom), but that publication is on the Wikipedia citation blacklist so that a WP bot will automatically delete that citation. I hate the lack of VERIFIABLE news. What do others editors think of this situation?

I vote, remove Burgerim from this list. Or should this item be moved to Defunct? Let's discuss this one since we don't have any evidence that this company is still operating.

Can someone remove Atlanta Bread, Così, Daphne's, Great Wraps, Jerry's Subs, Tubby's, and Tudor's Biscuit World from group13 (Sandwiches).

  • Daphne's is a failing chain that has not exceeded a maximum of 70 anytime prior to filing for bankruptcy. There is no chance that the company would even reach its former record.
  • Tubby's's website only lists 70 locations, all within the state of Michigan and within a short drive from Detroit.

Not done for now: A majority of these are fast food chains, I don't see the necessity to remove them from the template. Just because some of them have 10-15 chains, doesn't make it any different. The template is "Fast-food chains of the United States" not "International fast-food chains" or "Popular fast-food chains". Cowboygilbert - (talk) ♥ 03:22, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Cowboygilbert: – The CURRENT written instructions for inclusion is for chains with 100 or more units and also have units located in different several states. Are you saying that we should change the rules and allow chains with just as few as 10-15 total units should remain on this template? If so, THOUSANDS of chains can potentially meet this lower threshold. Are you suggesting that we need to increase the length of this template by adding these smaller chains to this already bloated template since you do not believe that this template is large enough? 100 units is an arbitrary threshold that I did not set. I know about two dozens small chains off the top of my head that are not on this template that could meet your lower threshold for inclusion and should be included.
