fix for alt tag text

edit

Would it be possible to change the code to be as follows:

[[Image:{{ #if: {{{variant|}}} | {{{flag alias-{{{variant}}}}}} | {{{flag alias}}} }}|{{ #if: {{{size|}}} | {{{size}}} | 22x20px }}|border|Flag of {{{flag name alias|{{{alias}}}}}}]]

This change would allow for a "flag name alias" variable to be used in country_data template for countries where "alias" is not the same as "shortname alias". This variable would allow the alt text of flags to appear correctly. For example, in the case of Ireland, the alt text of the flag image would be able to read "Flag of Ireland" not "Flag of Republic of Ireland", as it does at present. The change would also allow related sporting flags (e.g. {{fb|Ireland}}) to display alt tags correctly. --sony-youthpléigh 22:04, 22 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Translate to {{Country flagicon}}

edit

{{editprotected}}

Shouldn't this template be renamed to {{Country flagicon}}, the name without the 2 is redirect to this template, so it shouldn't be a problem to translate this template. Locos ~ epraix Beaste~praix 20:10, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't really matter, does it, since it's only a meta template, and should never be used directly. I'll let Andrew decide that in any case, I'm sure he has this on his watchlist. Amalthea 21:46, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Agree, I'm not sure why this is needed. The downside is that we would add a quarter million tasks to the job queue (I think) by this change, so we need a compelling reason before proceeding. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 04:57, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Then, let's keep the things as they are. Locos ~ epraix Beaste~praix 05:02, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please change the size attribute from 22x20 to 24x16 23x15 pixels because most of national flags have ratio 3:2, that means the flagicon will be "full" (for example   Italy). Many flags have ratio 2:1 (for example   Great Britain), that means the flagicon will be in fact 24x12 pixels.
And, especially, three national flags —    Switzerland,   Vatican City and     Nepal will be in 16x16 pix size, because they are in 1:1 ratio. These flagicons are currently causing an ugliness of the wikitables, like in this example:

  Italy (default)
   Switzerland (default, big 20px icon — this row is higher)
  China (default)
  Vatican City (default, big 20px icon — this row is higher)
  Austria (default)
    Nepal (default, big 20px icon — this row is higher)
  Turkey (default)
  Tanzania (default — same row height)
   Switzerland (modified — same row height)
  Vatican City (modified — same row height)
    Nepal (modified — same row height)

So, change the text of this template to this:
[[File:{{{flag alias}}}|24x16px|border |alt={{{alias}}}|link={{{alias}}}]]

  Not done for now: Hi Maiō, and thanks for the edit request. This would be a fairly major change to the template, and it would affect about 350,000 articles, so I think it needs some more discussion before we implement it. Could you post notices on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Flag Template and WP:VPT letting users know about your proposed change, and then leave about a week for people to comment? If there are no objections after that then you can reactivate the {{edit protected}} template and I can make the change. Best — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 13:59, 2 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Mr. Stradivarius, I'm back! The big       flagicons are already fixed in their respective country-data templates. But, there is still a problem with narrow flags, like Australia or Canada.

Practically all contributors agree with the icon height of 15 pixels, as you see here. So, now is the right time to modify the template to 23x15 px. Thanks,
