The template is too long, and is being innapropriately placed on articles where it pushes the entire content of the article a few miles down. This applies to all non-Gecko-based browsers, such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The article Great Peace of Montreal is one such example.

Also, why is it being inlined within other existing templates? This is terrible practice. See Inuit for an example.

Second of all, the template needs to be more generalised. To give you an idea, when it comes to only Canadian languages, there are over 55 of them. Factor in dialects, and you'll end up with a few hundred of them. - Also, if this template is about Aboriginal peoples of Canada, why are the Goidelic languages included (the only Canadian Goidelic language is Canadian Gaelic)? It's a European language, not an Aboriginal language of Canada.

For an example of an overtly long template that's collapsable, see Template:Brahmic, or Template:Alphabet. A more appropriate template style however would be to have it horizontally oriented, rather than vertically extending. For example, Template:Writing systems. - Io Katai (talk) 19:21, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I agree I have removed to sections |heading9 = Category

|content9 = Aboriginal  · First Nations
Inuit  · Métis |heading10 = Prefix |content10 =Aboriginal  · First Nations
Inuit · Métis

I know Buzzz the guy who expanded this, he will not mind, and would like us to solve any problem fast!

And have left just the main link to languages-that i guess in time will have them all. 174.115.165.184 (talk) 20:25, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category:Aboriginal culture in Canada

edit

FYI, I've just created Category:Aboriginal culture in Canada to group First Nations, Inuit and Métis culture categories, and any Aboriginal culture articles we may have that span all three. Not sure if this can or should be worked into the template, but I thought I'd mention it. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 01:43, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

restore 4 official symbols

edit

Dead wrong that the Maple leaf is a colonial symbol .....in fact it was picked on purpose to avoid any colonial symbolism in our flag [1]. -[2]. I also think best not to use a reginal creation myth symbol over official nationally recognized indegenos symbols [3].--Moxy-  12:14, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Dead wrong that the Maple leaf is a colonial symbol .....in fact it was picked on purpose to avoid any colonial symbolism in our flag But indigenous people had no input on the design. Canada is a settler-colonial state so all its official symbols(except those related to treaties and reconciliation) are by definition of the colonist (i.e. colonial). A new flag designed at a time of the residential schools and the Sixties Scoop still bears the same aura of injustice for indigenous people as any past symbols. For these reasons, I think it's insensitive to use an official Canadian state symbol to represent the indigenous people of this country, and stick to symbols of their own.
As for the turtle, I don't think much harm is done by including it. Despite it's Iroquoi/algonquian origin, Turtle Island took an increased importance in recent years [4]. But we could just include the a design featuring three nationally recognized symbols. Mottezen (talk) 17:49, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Have asked for input with this topic.... as I dont want to get into an argument about an advocacy POV vs real world meaning. Wikipedia talk:Canadian Wikipedians' notice board#proposal to change image for Template:Indigenous Peoples of Canada-Moxy-  18:40, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
