Previous/Current/Next calculation

There is a problem when you are creating an article for the very first tournament, or if there is a gap between tournaments (PAC 10), when a conference merges into another, or when a conference dissolves completely. Is there a possible way to override the previous next year links? Thanks, Group29 (talk) 14:51, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

To address your concern (and those that I had as well), I added 4 variables to the chart for special circumstances, based upon the Yearly football game infobox template that I have been working on. It is fairly straightforward, but I will attempt to describe how each variable will affect a tournament infobox, and I hope I do not confuse anyone.

Here are the 4 relevant variables:

....and here is how you use each one:

| FirstTournamentEver= Simply type "Yes" (or anything really) and the backwards pointing year will be 
blanked. You should use this if this is the very first year in a string of tournaments.
| LastTournamentEver= Simply type "Yes" (or anything really) and the forwards pointing year will be 
blanked. You should use this if this is the very last year in a string of tournaments.
| Different Previous= In this one, you must type in a different link to send the previous year to. 
For instance, typing [[2004 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament|2004]] would point the preceding tournament 
to the 2004 ACC Tournament. It is important that you use the year after a | sign so that only the year 
shows up.
| Different Next=In this one, you must type in a different link to send the next year to. For instance, 
typing [[2007 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament|2007]] would point the next tournament to the 2007 ACC 
Tournament. It is important that you use the year after a | sign so that only the year shows up.

Here is an example of what would happen if you wanted to have this as the first ever tournament in a series. (I removed most of the other variables so it is easier to see):

.....as you can see, there is no previous link, but there is an after link. (to the next one) Now, let's see what happens if I want to link to a different subsequent tournament (this time without turning off the previous one):

...as you can see, the template links to the 2008 ACC tournament as the next tournament. (If nothing had been typed in there, it would have linked to the 2003 SEC tournament instead). 1999–00 issues

For the template, if you set 2000 as the year, it sets the season to "1999–00" instead of "1999–2000" leaving a redirect to 1999–2000 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, with the season set as 1999–00. I have little to no experience with infobox templates like these, but if anyone could figure out how to fix it, that would be great. Obviously, the reason why "1999–00" is unused is that it implies an event that went from 1999 to 1900, instead of 2000. KingSkyLord (talk | contribs) 02:12, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

"Different Previous / Next" parameter documentation

Ex, the 2011 Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament article correctly uses:

| Different Next = [[2012 Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament|2012]]

which creates a differentiated link (Pacific-10 vs Pac-12) to 2012 Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.

Request is to add documentation for these 2 optional parameters which modify the default behavior of the previous and next links, like:

• | Different Previous =
• | Different Next =

Template:Infobox college sports team season has the same feature, but uses a different parameter naming convention. More editors are familiar with that template than this template. So the best outcome in my view would be to adopt that convention into this template, document it, and preserve the existing parameter support as a historical undocumented feature. Template:Infobox NCAA football yearly game also has the feature and with this convention:

Gender/case issues

When the RM at Talk:ACC_Men's_Basketball_Tournament#Requested_move_23_August_2022 finishes, it seems clear that we'll want "men's basketball tournament" and "women's basketball tournament" to be lowercase in the infoxes like in the titles. Changing the ibx title at the top is straightforward. The navigation links are more tricky if not all the pages are moved to lowercase—there will be a red link unless there is a redirect in the interim to the uppercase title.—Bagumba (talk) 16:09, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

Maybe I'm being too pedantic. That RM only formally nominated a small number of pages. It seems reasonable that its closure now might lead to bold moves of other similar pages not explicitly listed in the RM. So I guess I was literally folowing your OP wording of "When the RM...finishes", and I was merely stating that the RM along with a lot of other related moves—outside of that RM—needed to take place first. I suspect we're both on the same page here, but just wording it differently.—Bagumba (talk) 05:07, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

OK, I see. In the RM, it says "The ones listed here represent the longer list at the discussion at WT:WikiProject College Basketball#Over-capitalization ...". I think/hope respondents and closer understood that. There's now a bot request for approval to move the rest: Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/TolBot 13C.
