Proposed changes

Per the discussion at Talk:1981 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament#Requested move 15 February 2017, many past NCAA Tournament pages have been renamed. Tournaments from 1974 to 1981 are titled "[Year] NCAA Division [I, II, III] Basketball Tournament", from 1957 to 1973 "[Year] NCAA [University or College] Division Basketball Tournament", and simply "[Year] NCAA Basketball Tournament" 1939 to 1956. This is to eliminate the anachronistic Division I et al. from 1973 and earlier.

However, there are now many red links in the succession_before and succession_after fields for the 1981 and earlier articles. So could somebody who's more savvy with editing templates change those fields as well as the template in general? A basic outline, for which "current year" refers to the year in article title:

• Title:
  • If current year >= 1974 && current year <= 1981: NCAA Division [I etc.] Basketball Tournament
  • If current year >= 1957 && current year <= 1973: NCAA [University or College] Division Basketball Tournament
  • If current year >= 1939 && current year <= 1956: NCAA Basketball Tournament
• Succession before:
  • If current year >= 1975 && current year <= 1982: NCAA Division [I etc.] Basketball Tournament
  • If current year >= 1958 && current year <= 1974: NCAA [University or College] Division Basketball Tournament
  • If current year >= 1940 && current year <= 1957: NCAA Basketball Tournament
• Succession after:
  • If current year >= 1973 && current year <= 1980: NCAA Division [I etc.] Basketball Tournament
  • If current year >= 1956 && current year <= 1972: NCAA [University or College] Division Basketball Tournament
  • If current year >= 1939 && current year <= 1955: NCAA Basketball Tournament

PrevYear/NextYear functionality

@Frietjes: The PrevYear and NextYear parameters don't seem to work for any tournament type that isn't set in the {{Infobox college basketball tournament/label}} list. Can we make those parameters functional without adding every tournament to the Type list? I was hoping to add succession boxes to the 2023 Maui Invitational. Is this infobox misapplied there (this appears to be the only early basketball season tournament with yearly articles)? Hoof Hearted (talk) 13:47, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Hoof Hearted, I added something with a temporary tracking category (Category:Pages using infobox college basketball tournament with auto succession links) to make sure the new feature is working properly. I am not sure if we ever need an override to turn off this feature in certain cases, but the tracking category will help to inspect all the uses. Frietjes (talk) 16:08, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
