Problem with Infobox sports competition event

edit
(moved from Sillyfolkboy talk page)

There is a problem with Template:Infobox sports competition event which you last edited to add "competition" field after "event" field. Problem is that there is no spacing between them. Here is example: 2015 World Championships in Athletics – Women's pole vault. I think there should be a <br> or " at the " between event and competition fields, but I don't know how to add that so it doesn't appear when competition field does not exist. Make91 (talk) 06:12, 6 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Make91: The issue pre-dates my edit and has been present since the merge in March. The competition parameter doesn't output if event is populated. For championships articles, event and competition parameters are used. It looks like a bad merge job. The resulting template will not function for all the uses that were merged into it. Competition parameter is used with both games/championships and single-event competitions (e.g. Boston Marathon). The fix will be to amend the championship-type articles (as above) so that rather than using "competition" parameter they use the "championship" parameter instead. This will fix the issue. On the plus side, the current outcome is still correct, though not precise. SFB 18:27, 9 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
I have fixed this issue after a bit of testing in the /sandbox. That should fix those articles where the infobox was displaying event without the second line for competition, plus others where the second line generated by governing_body would not display. It still allows competition to be used by itself without adding "at the" when there is no event (just like it did before some of the recent edits). Additionally, I have fixed a separate issue where a recent change introduced multiple blank lines in the Medalists section when the gold/silver/bronze parameters were used without their associated _nation or NOC parameters, such as is common for team sports. Check out the updated /testcases and added examples in /doc. Please let me know if you come across any instances of this infobox that do not display as expected (you may need to purge the page to see the changes, like I had to do at 2015 World Championships in Athletics – Women's pole vault). men and women parameters

edit

In the "complete syntax", the parameters "men" and "women" are included. In the list of parameters, they are missing, hence editors don't know what the parameters do, or how to use them. Schwede66 02:31, 11 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Template-protected edit request on 24 August 2018

edit

Pursuant to the discussion at Category talk:Articles which use infobox templates with no data rows#Categorisation, I've been looking for templates which are unnecessarily populating the tracking category. It's quite common for this template to be used with only the parameters "previous" or "next" (usually both) and that case triggers the "no data rows" condition. Since this is a common and accepted use, I want to add |decat=yes to the call to the infobox module. I've already done this successfully at Infobox_cricket_tournament Diff/856345363 and I'm just applying the same approach to other templates as I discover them.

After line 93, near the bottom, which looks like:

| below = {{#if:{{{prev|{{{previous|}}}}}}|{{align|left|← {{{prev|{{{previous}}}}}}}}}}{{#if:{{{next|}}}|{{align|right|{{{next}}} →}}}}

please add the following line:

| decat = {{#if:{{{previous|}}}{{{next|}}}|yes|no}}

Thanks. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 16:07, 24 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I missed a parameter, even though it was staring me in the face. It makes sense that people would use the shorter synonym when two are offered. Can you add "prev", please. With this addition, the line (94) should look like:

| decat = {{#if:{{{prev|{{{previous|}}}}}}{{{next|}}}|yes|no}}

I wish I could tell you I've tested this more before I asked you to edit it, but the decategorization only happens after the template edit has gone live, sometimes with a considerable delay. On the good news side, these changes can be easily verified not to change the look of the rendered page and errors of omission like this one merely cause the pages to remain in the category that we were trying to exclude them from. Flags

edit

Hi, I wonder if it's possible to add flag variants into this templates, it's no problem with multisport competitions like the Olympics obviously but for other competitions, for example this page what if one of those medal winning countries had a different flag at the time ? I'm asking this because I want to know if I can use this template for some older events. Mohsen1248 (talk) 23:30, 9 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Check for unknown parameters

To be added to the template:

Your invocation seems to list parameters which the template doesn't actually have. Should this request have been made for a different template? firefly ( t · c ) 10:20, 21 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Firefly and MSGJ:I updated the parameters. Shkuru Afshar (talk) 02:20, 18 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

  Done Note that I didn't actually rely on the above list of parameters (which still includes some parameters the code doesn't use and omits some the code does), but instead used User:Frietjes/addcheckforunknownparameters.js to generate a standard "check for unknown parameters" invocation for this template. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:16, 10 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Flag variants

edit

Is it possible to add flag_var parameters to the template? it's no problem when you use it for Games like the Olympics. but for single sport events like this it doesn't allow you to use a different flag. look at the example I put here, it shows the current Afghanistan flag and as far as I know there is no way we can use the 2013 variant flag with this template.

edit

I want to use this template on some older sport competitions where countries had different flags, names etc. I checked it and these changes will achieve that. adding |variant={{{gold_variant|}}}|name={{{gold_name|}}} to this line:

| {{Infobox sports competition event/medalrow|gold|{{{gold}}}|code={{{gold_nation|{{{goldNOC|}}}}}}|games={{{games|{{{year|}}} {{{type|}}}}}}|governing_body={{{governing_body|}}}|longnames={{{longnames|}}} }}
making it
| {{Infobox sports competition event/medalrow|gold|{{{gold}}}|code={{{gold_nation|{{{goldNOC|}}}}}}|variant={{{gold_variant|}}}|name={{{gold_name|}}}|games={{{games|{{{year|}}} {{{type|}}}}}}|governing_body={{{governing_body|}}}|longnames={{{longnames|}}} }}
and then adding almost the same thing to the next lines in order
|variant={{{gold2_variant|}}}|name={{{gold2_name|}}}
|variant={{{gold3_variant|}}}|name={{{gold3_name|}}}
|variant={{{silver_variant|}}}|name={{{silver_name|}}}
|variant={{{silver2_variant|}}}|name={{{silver2_name|}}}
|variant={{{silver3_variant|}}}|name={{{silver3_name|}}}
|variant={{{bronze_variant|}}}|name={{{bronze_name|}}}
|variant={{{bronze2_variant|}}}|name={{{bronze2_name|}}}
|variant={{{bronze3_variant|}}}|name={{{bronze3_name|}}}
completely similar to edits I did here and I tested them and apparently there is no problem. Sports2021 (talk) 05:08, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Compatibility with multi-event "event"

edit

The Olympics infobox has a parameter "num_events" for usage in an event that includes multiple events. Can we add that here as well? Piriprimey (talk) 18:40, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

I agree. The number of events varies. Pelmeen10 (talk) 15:43, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
  Sandboxed – to begin, {{Infobox Olympics}} is a template redirect that targets {{Infobox Olympic games}}. That ibox does not have a "num_events" parameter, it has simply an |events= parameter that requires a multiple input of "[number of events] in [number of sports] sports ([number of disciplines] disciplines)". An example would be seen in the 1956 Winter Olympics article that depicts "Events 24 in 4 sports (8 disciplines)". Since this ibox already has an |event= parameter, a |contests= parameter has been added to this ibox's [sandbox]. Would like to hear what editors Piriprimey, Pelmeen10 and anyone else thinks about this, because it will probably require a consensus to carry out. Thank you in advance for your input!
