The template should have an additional parameter for placeId of Placenames Database to use as a reference. E.g.

{{Irish place name|Áth an Chóiste|placeId=11521}}

would produce

where the reference becomes:

This is a good idea, encouraging proper citation and making it easier to do.

The format has changed a little—logainm.ie now provides a permanent link format which we should use. I think linking a government department is a bad idea as they can and do change from government to government. The project is also a joint effort between Fiontar, Scoil na Gaeilge (Dublin City University) and The Placenames Branch of (currently) The Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Maybe the best formula for publisher would be “Fiontar, Scoil na Gaeilge (Dublin City University), Government of Ireland”. Since the database is updated on an ongoing basis, I’m not sure it’s appropriate to give it a publication date. We would also need an obligatory accessdate parameter, unless there is some way of getting a template to change its own parameters.

OTOH maybe it’s a bad idea to hide a citation inside a (non-citation) template? It may be confusing for people checking citations and it might cause problems for pages that already have citations (though I suspect I’m the only person who’s done this).

I’ve created a template sandbox and a page for testing. It seems to be working OK, but probably worth being cautious with such a common template. —☸ Moilleadóir ☎ 06:59, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Option to unlink Irish

This template has a function similar similar to Template:Lang. That template has an option to suppress the wikilinking of the the language name (|links=no). This option should be included in this template. As it should in {{etymology}} as well. When used en mass (e.g. Mangerton Mountain) the overlinking of Irish is absurd. Please amend this template so that the example quoted renders as:

Irish: Caisleán an Bharraigh 'Castle of the Barry family'

(no space after the italics, single quotes around the translation) consistent with the standard way of displaying such glosses (for example using {{lang-ga}}), and in accordance with MOS:SINGLE. Thanks, Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:08, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

MOS:CAPS

In the example given, I believe that MOS:CAPS should apply to the translation/meaning parameter. So:

• Code: {{Irish place name|Caisleán an Bharraigh|castle of the Barry family}}
• Result: Irish: Caisleán an Bharraigh, meaning 'castle of the Barry family'
