Template:Refimprove section → Template:More citations needed section – As noted in the previous discussion, the parent template, which this template uses, was changed to {{More citations needed}}. A WP:CONSISTENT naming style exists with maintaince templates, where the sub-templates are named after the parent one: {{One source}} / {{One source section}}; {{Refexample}} / {{Refexample section}}; {{Unreferenced}} / {{Unreferenced section}}; {{BLP unsourced}} / {{BLP unsourced section}}; {{BLP sources}} / {{BLP sources section}}; {{Unreferenced-law}} / {{Unreferenced-law section}}; {{Cite check}} / {{Cite check section}}; {{Original research}} / {{Original research section}}; {{Speculation}} / {{Speculation section}}. This is the only one not matching. Matching the sub-templates with the parent templates, also allows for easier identification inside the article itself and better automatic sorting in categories. Template:Refimprovesect and Template:Ref improve section are fully-protected double redirects to Template:More citations needed section that should be changed to a direct redirect. TimBentley (talk) 16:57, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Please either:
- remove the invocation of {{Find sources}}, or
- add a new optional (named or numbered) parameter (no default) with one required parameter consisting of a text string, which, if present, invokes {{find sources}} on the value of the text string.
Currently, the {{Find sources}} is always invoked with the default value, which is to say, the article title. For most sections within an article, this is both useless and unhelpful, enlarges and clutters the template, and may lead well-meaning newbies down a garden path.
Ideally, one could make the text string param optional, with some code to grab the name of the section header title of the lowest section within which the template is located, and use that as a default param value if no text string was given, but that seems a bit ambitious. As a first cut, we should require entry of a text string param, and if either the optional param or the required param value is missing, then the invocation of {{find sources}} should be suppressed.
I imagine this was probably inherited from {{Refimprove}}, where it is definitely useful; but it isn't here. Mathglot (talk) 20:17, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- Not done for now: {{More citations needed}} must be changed to be able to implement this. — JJMC89 (T·C) 22:22, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
- JJMC89, agreed. I had completely forgotten about this old request, ended up coming back to it via another route, and posted about it elsewhere, which circled me back here again to invite discussion about it. See next section below. (P.S. in the interim, I have gained template permissions, so could implement the change to {{More citations needed}} myself; however, there's no hurry, and the feedback request discussion linked below should be step one before any of this happens.) Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 01:12, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
In sandbox testing
editThis has been implemented and is in sandbox testing and appears to be working. Please see this discussion. If no objections in around a week or so, I'll move this live. Adding JJMC89. Mathglot (talk) 09:50, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
Feedback sought in discussion about find sources in reference templates
editYour feedback would be welcome at this discussion concerning the impact of using {{find sources}} in templates that have "section" variants, such as {{unreferenced section}}, and others. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 01:07, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
Add param 'find' to control display of Find sources
editFunctionality for the new 'find' param similar to that mentioned above at #Template-protected edit request on 15 June 2019, was first implemented at Template:Unreferenced. The same feature is proposed for this template, and is now open for discussion so the same functionality can be implemented in {{More citations needed section}}. Please see discussion here. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 06:35, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- Done. Functionality update of both templates is now complete. Doc pages done. Mathglot (talk) 08:06, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
- The main template was augmented to support unquoted search, per a request in one of the related templates, which I'll link, when I remember where it was, and this template was tweaked to pass the new param. Testcases and doc updated in the main template. Mathglot (talk) 06:09, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
Reversion per reported error
editThis template was reverted back to version 968338803 due to an error report and discussion here: Template talk:More citations needed#Error?.
Additional testcases have been added for this template and show the problem existing in the previous revision as well, but it could be the non-section version of the template. Please follow the discussion above. Mathglot (talk) 19:51, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
