Template talk:MusicBrainz artist

Usage

edit

Note: The "name" parameter is optional. If omitted, the article page title would be used.

Example

edit

Please make this match other discography wordings which are clearer

edit

editrequest This "editrequest" tag was added March 11 for a month-old request. All Musicbrainz templates need a slight edit to match the other discography sites wordings (eg. Discogs) which just have the Artist being included in the link and not the word "discography" which is not needed. Such ease-of-style change would better aid ease of understanding what the link info is going to. (i.e. should be "Artist discography at Musicbrainz" rather than "Artist discography at Musicbrainz"). Jimthing (talk) 09:28, 6 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Specifically, the word "discography" should be in plain text and outside of the link. A clear example of the discrepancy can be seen at the bottom of the Queensrÿche discography article.--Lashuto (talk) 23:36, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

URL update suggestion

edit

Old format:

http://musicbrainz.org/artist/66fc5bf8-daa4-4241-b378-9bc9077939d2.html

New format:

http://musicbrainz.org/artist/66fc5bf8-daa4-4241-b378-9bc9077939d2

Old URLs still work, but they redirect to new ones. This is true for all MusicBrainz entities, so other MB templates (release, release-group) require update too. LiDEL (talk) 18:31, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Insert a code, please.

{PAGENAME} discography at MusicBrainz

Can you explain what the effect of the change would be, and why it should be done? JamesBWatson (talk) 16:20, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
If it doesn't, pagename is not presented properly. See Sting (musician). So, it should be inserted. See other template Template:BBCMusic artist, Template:Discogs artist, Template:RollingStone artist, Template:VH1 artist--777sms (talk) 16:55, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
The template is currently working as intended. The documentation says that named parameters should be used in the following way:

Using named parameters has the advantage that it doesn't matter what order they are specified. So I'm not sure I see the need for this change. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:30, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Convert to meta template

edit

edit request I'm converting all the MB templates (except the wiki) to the new MusicBrainz meta. This new template will ensure that all of them will use the same URL structure.

So this is what I need it changed to:

<includeonly>{{#if:{{{id|{}}}}||<span class="error">ERROR: missing "id" →</span>}}</includeonly>{{MusicBrainz meta|artist|{{{id|{}}}}|{PAGENAME}}} discography at MusicBrainz<noinclude>

Convert to meta (again)

edit

For whatever reason, I didn't notice that the convert to meta request never went through. So I need the template body changed to

{{MusicBrainz meta|type=artist|id={{{id|{}}}}|name={{{name|{}}}}}}

This way all functionality will go to the meta template. The links generated by the current template are for an older format. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 20:54, 26 April 2013 (UTC) (original author)Reply

Edit request on 28 April 2013: Check Wikidata data

edit

This is a set of code that will verify the data against Wikidata, but not actually pull any data from it. You can see a similar example at Template_talk:Commonscat#Edit_request_on_24_April_2013:_Check_Wikidata_errors.

{{#if: NAMESPACE || <!-- Only use in mainspace -->
{{#if:
 | {{#ifeq: | {{{id|{}}}}
 | <!-- Good -->
 | <!-- These need to be fixed -->
 }}
 | <!-- Not imported yet -->

}}

This should be compatible with the above edit protected request. Thanks, Legoktm (talk) 10:05, 28 April 2013 (UTC) Legoktm (talk) 10:05, 28 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Largely unnecessary?

edit

Authority control generates MuscBrainz links automatically or can be told to do so with |MBA=, e.g. with |MBA=. Doesn't that make this template largely unnecessary? All singers, and many other occupations, where this template is used now have the same entry repeated in their Authority control box; e.g. Dolly Parton. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 02:40, 13 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

The MBA parameter of authority control isn't even documented in Authority_control. --JonnyJD (talk) 21:41, 15 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Add it then? It's documented at Template:Authority_control#Usage. Legoktm (talk) 22:46, 15 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
My point was rather: properly documenting (and making the documentation visible) should come first. I only found out about the MBA parameter because you told me here. Wikipedia:Authority control certainly looks like it somewhat documents the template and it doesn't give the impression that there is another documentation where different or more parameters are used. I fixed that a bit.
Apart from that, I am not strictly against replacing this template with Authority Control. I have one issue with it though: This template tells that there is a discography to be found at MusicBrainz, Authority Control only gives the ID (although one could somewhat guess that by the name). --JonnyJD (talk) 16:11, 16 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

authority control is doing MusicBrainz all wrong. Aside from using a wrongly named parameter, it only shows up if there are some other parameters set on the wikidata page. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 04:51, 22 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

@CyberSkull: The latter certainly needs fixing; what, do you suggest, needs changing to remedy the former issue? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:39, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Template-protected edit request on 22 February 2014

For more consistency with MusicBrainz, the id parameter has been renamed to mbid. Functionally, nothing has changed, but the documentation can't be updatded yet until the following code change can be made:

{{MusicBrainz meta
|type=artist
|mbid={{{mbid|{{{id|{}}}}}}}
|name={PAGENAME}
|wdc-property=p434
|wcd-category=MusicBrainz artist
}} discography at MusicBrainz<noinclude>
Documentation
</noinclude>

Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 04:58, 22 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

  Question: @CyberSkull: it looks like your change to the |wcd-category= parameter would break the categorisation scheme. Tracking categories not working correctly?

edit

It seems that many articles are incorrectly added to Category:MusicBrainz artist not in Wikidata. For example 65daysofstatic and The B-52's both have the same respective mbid as that in their Wikidata entries. Other templates based on Template:MusicBrainz meta don't seem to have this problem. The only difference I can see with the other MusicBrainz templates is the capitalization of the property in " |wdc-property=p434", which may be worth trying to capitalize. Anyone sees what's wrong or am I missing something? --Azertus (talk) 11:29, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
