Add category

In order to categorize all user pages that transclude this template without the use of a bot, the following Wikicode should be added:

{{user other | [[Category:Retired Wikipedia editors]] }}

I created the proposed revision of the template in a user subpage.

There's already a list at [1]. I'm not sure this category would be such a good idea because (although I haven't looked up the exact numbers) the vast majority of editors here are retired and most don't use that template to announce it. Tra (Talk) 02:12, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

I actually think this would be useful in a variety of ways. We could additionally have people listed by the year they retired. Although that won't provide a definitive figure, it could at least allow for some more meaningful analysis of editor retention.--The Devil's Advocate (talk) 18:31, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Fake retirements

User:PleaseStand has a nice little script at User:PleaseStand/User_info that, in part, tells you how long it's been since someone last edited. Is it possible to incorporate something like that into this template? I'm thinking about a simple text line underneath the template that says, "This user last edited ____ ago". I think that's been asked before, and the conclusion was that it'd be unnecessarily confrontational to force that upon everyone. You can always just install the script if you want to see it for your eyes only. —Soap— 16:54, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

I have installed it, of course, but I think that even casual users and IPs would benefit from knowing whether the allegedly retired person is still editing (at least occasionally). "Retired, but last edited 3 days ago" gives you hope that your question for the user might be answered. "Retired, but last edited 15 months ago" encourage you to ask somewhere else. Well, Javascript wouldn't work, and I thought I once saw a magic word that would show how long it's been since someone has last edited, but it doesn't seem to be on Help:Magic words or the mediawiki.org version of the same page, so maybe it's not possible after all. —Soap— 15:56, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Add Category:All Wikipedia bots to bot=yes

For retired bots, the template previously only added the page to Category:Inactive Wikipedia bots. But we also have Category:All Wikipedia bots, which is to be for "all Wikipedia bots listed by name, regardless of status". I've added the Category:All Wikipedia bots category to this template when bot=yes. Staeiou (talk) 21:10, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Use by blocked users?

Is it permissible for a blocked user (even one who has lost talk: access to) to use this? Or do we see that as too misleading? Andy Dingley (talk) 17:40, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

IMO no, they shouldn't be permitted to use it, especially if they're blocked indefinitely. I see it as an attempt to hide the fact they left WP:Under a cloud. -- œ^™ 08:13, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

I and a few others have had a productive conversation about this on my usertalk (permalink). It seems we're all in agreement that {{retired}} should not be used by sitebanned users (noting that Wikipedia:Retiring mentions both blocks and partial bans as a reason someone might retire) or users who are socking or otherwise misbehaving after an indef, but some of us feel that categorically prohibiting usage by blocked users goes too far. So I have partially invoked BRD here and changed the wording to "if you have been sitebanned or have engaged in sockpuppetry or other serious misconduct after being indefinitely blocked". Subst

Would it be worth it to add an optional template substitution for this template that includes the {{nobots}} template as well, so after someone retires, bots won't continue to post messages on their talk pages? HapHaxion _{(talk / contribs)} 23:12, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

Readability in Vector 2022

It seems that with narrow-column style of Vector 2022, 2.5vw is too wide for letter-spacing. For example, on pages User:PsychAWB and User:QEDKbot only letters "Deactiva" are visible, and "ted" is cut off.

I propose reducing the spacing to 1.8vw for readability: Special:Diff/1147055419/1147056826.

The way {{nobots}} works, it is almost useless when transcluded through other templates. See Template:Bots#Important notes: Most bots will NOT understand these templates when they are indirectly transcluded. —⁠andrybak (talk) 20:01, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
