Template talk:Recategorize

Template should have its own category

edit

Currently this template puts articles in Category:Wikipedia articles needing style editing, which doesn't make sense. Categorization has nothing to do with the "style" of the article. A large number of other templates dump their pages into this category, so the category is of minimal usefulness to find articles needing attention to categories.

There are several other templates that do deal with article categorization. It would make more sense for this template to use a category more closely associated with other category related templates. (Probably should be its own category, e.g. Category:too many categories, a subcategory of Category:Wikipedia category cleanup.) This would allow those interested in cleaning up categorization to find apropos articles. Zodon (talk) 08:58, 26 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Too many categories was clearer name

edit

This template was formerly called {{Too many categories}}. That name was better, since it made it clearer when to use it. The current name Recategorize is not as clear. The name is now more confusing with {{Checkcategory}}, and {{Improve categories}}.

In the deletion discussion questions were raised as to what constitutes too many categories. WP:Overcat addresses this to some extent. Certainly there may be differences of opinion, but there certainly are or have been pages with way to many categories. Such as this version of a page about a minor author, with 72 categories.

If a template like this is not used, it may indicate a need for greater visibility of the template, or that cleanup efforts have been successful. That does not mean it may not be needed in the future.

I think it should be moved back to the name Too many categories, or perhaps moved to {{overcategorized}}. (Since the link to the policy document is WP:overcat, that is where I looked for this template originally.) Zodon (talk) 20:20, 27 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
