Accessibility dispute

edit

I have added the {{accessibility dispute}} template in place of the {{overcolored}} template, as this template has multiple issues:

1. Mackensen's edit to Hanoi rail is an accessibility improvement - which is, for each individual route, show the icon together with a plain text link - and the best way to provide full accessibility to the individual route links. I was hoping to carry it through the entire template, at which point I became confused because there appear to be different ways that different individual routes are added to the template:

2. However, other routes use different templates such as {{RouteBox}} and will need different handling to replace them with a colored box and a plain text link. Ideally a different template would be chosen that supports an icon/text link combination, such as {{Rail color box}} with the yes, small, dot, or square parameter.

3. Further, some routes use an image for the route icon. For example, Java Indonesia has the CB line. If I hover, I see the title text, which is "LRT Line 1 (Greater Jakarta LRT)". There is no alt text. The HTML standard states regarding alt versus title:

A corollary to this is that the alt attribute's value should never contain text that could be considered the image's caption, title, or legend. It is supposed to contain replacement text that could be used by users instead of the image; it is not meant to supplement the image. The title attribute can be used for supplemental information. Another corollary is that the alt attribute's value should not repeat information that is already provided in the prose next to the image.

Ideally, this would get the same treatment, that a displayed icon would be immediately followed by a text link reading Cibubur Line. Then the icon would need the alt attribute alt="" (not a missing alt attribute) since the icon would now be purely decorative.

@Thisisnotatest to be clear I viewed my edit as an initial step, because I was still dealing with the Hanoi routes and it has to be addressed system-by-system. The template is still totally inadequate. Mackensen (talk) 11:27, 7 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Mackensen: Gotcha. I wasn't complaining about how far you got, only wanted to call out that your result solved the issue for that edit and would best be copied for future edits.
There are sadly many different ways to put routes into a template. This is going to make unraveling them to achieve full accessibility a huge task, one that I attempted and was quickly overwhelmed by. Thisisnotatest (talk) 03:52, 8 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
