Move to WPGreece?

I propose renaming this template to WPGreece since the project and this banner is used for far more Greece related subjects than just history. A redirect from here to the new name should take care of all existing articles. What does the community think? --Kimon 16:14, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Strange behaviour

I noticed on Talk:Stephanos Skouloudis that this template is acting oddly. It is giving the text "This page is not an article and does not require a rating" even for those talk pages where the article is rated. Ah, now I see. I appreciate creativity and think we should constantly look at things and even change them. I am not sure if this change is the best. The Greek flag to me is limiting to the Hellenic Republic and I think the project includes articles about Greece writ large: from the Descent of the Dorians through the Minoan, Hellenistic, Macedonian, Byzantine and Modern times, including the diaspora, Cyprus, and Cavafy (for example). Maybe the flag is the best symbol for Greeks, but I wonder if there is an image that covers all that we include? Probably not, but let's think what represents Hellenism rather than the nation of Greece. Again, I want to encourage your creativity, but let's think bigger... Argos'Dad 23:35, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

The Parthenon is universally recognized as a symbol of Greece and Hellenism. There was an Orthodox church inside it at one time (though you can't tell from the outside) so it also represents a fusion of the Ancient and Christian eras. I think that might work. Some other ideas I thought of: a laurel wreath? a column? a stele of Athena? Nothing Byzantine or modern seems to fit... the laurel wreath was ancient and also represents the revival of the Olympics which also brings in sports and culture. Just some thoughts... There was Catholic church in there too and also a mosque; it is also believed that the frieze showed a procession for a religious event that included sports (like the ancient Olympics), so the Parthenon would cover a whole lot of the subjects of Greece and Hellenism in general. Though I like the idea of the laurel wreath, it may be misinterpreted as a peace symbol which I don't think is what we want (not that there's anything wrong with peace or anything). I thought of a column of the ionic or corinthian style but, I thought it would be too plain, I don't know..... You're right, nothing of the Roman era or later that comes to mind would adequately cover the broad subject we want.

DEFAULTSORT

This template includes the code:

{{DEFAULTSORT:{{#if: {{{listas|}}}|{{{listas}}}|{{PAGENAME}}}}}}

If listas is not provided to the template, this code is forcing the pagename to be used as the default sort key, even if the correct default sort key has already been provided elsewhere. You can see this error at Talk:Anthopoulos Costaki for example. Using the pagename as the default sort key is the default anyway, so this should not be forced at all. This code needs to be replaced with:

Actually I just realized that the default sort key is fullpagename, not pagename. So with the code I provided, if listas is not specified and DEFAULTSORT is not specified correctly elsewhere, the page will be sorted under T for Talk. Problem

There appears to be a problem with the assessment parameters. Even when all five B-class criteria are checked, and the "class" parameter is set to "B" (e.e. Talk:Massacre of the Latins), the template displays and categorizes the article as C-class. Regards, Constantine ✍ 18:22, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello! I'd like to include a parameter to categorize articles related to Byzantine history, culture, etc. Currently there is no project for Byzantine-related stuff, and given that only a handful of editors ever edit on the topic, of whom I am probably the most active, there probably won't ever be one. However, a task force within WPGR, which is de facto the parent project for Byzantine-related articles, would be a good idea to have, as a starting point, to provide at least some essentials for interested editors, and facilitate administrative etc. work on related articles. I propose therefore the addition of a third task force in the WPGR template:

Note that I prefer the term "Byzantine world" as opposed to "Byzantine Empire", because it allows to cover the broader Byzantine cultural sphere (e.g. Melkites in northern Syria under Arab domination or Orthodox Greeks in southern Italy under the Normans), and is unaffected by political events like the fragmentation of the Empire after 1204 (i.e. it can easily cover the Nicaean Empire and the post-1261 restored Byz. Empire, the Despotate of Epirus, the Empire of Trebizond, even the Principality of Theodoro, etc.). Hi Cplakidas, I've synced the template for now. If you plan to just go off of the project-wide |importance= and |class=, I think you probably won't need a second separate task force assessment for importance/quality then. Re-open the request if you find a need for it though (will need multiple category creation) I've created Category:Byzantine world task force articles. I'd like to suggest replacing 2 images illustrating this template by better quality quasi-identical images that are now available on commons. To be precise, replacing :

Is topic a valid parameter?

Looking at the template code and the template documentation, it appears that |topic= is a valid parameter. However, when editing Talk:Arianism in the source editor, I see a message that states "Preview warning: Page using Template:WikiProject Greece with unexpected parameter "topic", and the page is included in Category:Pages using WikiProject Greece with unknown parameters.
