New Template for WikiProject_Tennis
editI am building a new template to accommodate changing Template:WikiProject Tennis from a custom template to a WPBannerMeta standard template. (In Progress this week)
Feel free to comment: User:Mjquin_id/Sandbox/Template:WikiProject_Tennis
This will require a number of categories to be renamed slightly to accommodate the standard.
Like moving From: Category:Category-Class tennis pages
To: Category:Category-Class Tennis articles

- You don't have to rename the categories, if you don't want to. Simply use the parameter
|ASSESSMENT_CAT = tennis articles

So the "real" page is "WikiProject Tennis" and the most common shortcut that I see (among other WP's) is "WP{Name}" which would be "WPTennis". I am would like to change THIS article to reflect the "Proper" name and only one shortcut "WPTennis"...and am prepared to change all other references to "WPTennis" using AWB. Any complaints? -- Mjquin_id (talk) 20:29, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
Template-protected edit request on 19 July 2021

- implementation of WorkGroup hooks for pre-existing Tennis workgroups; new categories to follow.
New version sitting in the Template's sandbox, docs, testcases, et al. are in my sandbox. This stems from my wanting to go on a mass Stub Crusade:Category:Stub-Class tennis articles; hence trying to sub-categorize stubs to the point where they are workable. Grand Slams, top 10 biographies, majors, etc. Mjquinn_id (talk) 15:22, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the
{{edit template-protected}}
template. You do not link to any discussions where this was proposed, let alone consensus reached. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:38, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
WorkGroups
editWe need a formal discussion about the implementation of work groups in the general tennis project template. (see the template edit request) I have a version in my sandbox. The general impetus of this is to reduce the 25K of Tennis stubs, for which I have also created User:Mjquinn id/sandbox/stubs by decade; because I could not find anything in the pile of stubs and the lack of a search mechanism for the category. It is basically changing the WikiProject template to implement the Work Groups that already exist. I appreciate any and all comments, herein. Mjquinn_id (talk) 20:54, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- I don't mind the idea, as the current cats are enormous and are comprised of >50% draw articles, which makes their navigation difficult. However, the subprojects should be selected based off articles' titles rather than with parameters, as who's going to go back and add the relevant params to the ~50k articles that use the template otherwise? E.g. if
(Davis|Fed|Billie Jean King) Cup
is in the title, then add the "Davis Cup-Fed Cup task force" subproject's category. —Somnifuguist (talk) 04:08, 20 July 2021 (UTC)- Fair. I really only planned on doing the stubs...at least first. Grand Slams, ATP, WTA, Then the two cups... going backwards in time. That (at least) would break up the Stub category. Then we change the "examples", on the Project page and most recent year (most people copy from a recent year anyway). I probably would automate quite a bit of it. All files in X category with the word Wimbledon, check for param, if not, place "*=yes". The mass editing tools are getting better, just not applied to projects very much. I've had time to understand this proposal a bit more, and have found the following discussions:
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals/2021/July#Proposal new Category:Stub-Class tennis articles by year
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting#Tennis competition stubs
There seems to be two separate processes related to stubs:
- Adding stub templates, e.g. Template:Tennis-stub, to article, which adds them to e.g. Category:Tennis stubs. This is under the purview of WikiProject Stub sorting, which approves the categories and sub-categories (like Category:Tennis competition stubs).
- Adding WikiProject banners, like Template:WikiProject Tennis to articles' talk pages. Depending on the
class=
parameter, this adds the talk pages to a category, e.g. Category:Stub-Class tennis articles. This is under the purview of WikiProject Tennis.
Looking at a comparable project, WikiProject Football, there is Category:Stub-Class football articles (process 2), which has various subcategories for different subprojects/taskforces of the project, e.g. Category:Stub-Class football in Ireland articles for Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Ireland task force. Adding the WikiProject Football banner to a talk page with irish=y
adds the page to the Irish football subcat, as well as the main Football project cat. You want to do the equivalent for the Grand Slam project, Tournament task force, and Davis Cup-Fed Cup Project subprojects of the tennis project. I don't think that's a bad idea, but as I said the template should automatically select the subproject (if applicable) based on the talk page's name if possible, to drastically reduce the workload. I'll help with implementing that.
The other thing is that you created Category:Grand Slam competition stubs, a subsubcategory of Category:Tennis stubs, which should be managed by the stub sorting project. I agree with the creation of that category to further divide Category:Tennis competition stubs, but it needs to be done through the stub project, following their guidelines and processes.

- So, this is the basic draft (simple implementation), but I would love to know how to do the "auto" read of the page name (2nd token after the year?): User:Mjquinn_id/sandbox/WikiProject_Tennis - anything, I can do to help, just ask. Mjquinn_id (talk) 20:24, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- Why are you doing it in user space, not at Template:WikiProject Tennis/sandbox? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:35, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- I wasn't originally sure how much of a change it would actually be. But you are correct, I should move it there...but at this point, probably after we implement. Mjquinn_id (talk) 13:31, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I don't actually have time to work on this further. I think the lack of engagement from other tennis project members indicates that this idea is dead in the water, i.e. there is no project consensus for it. Best, —Somnifuguist (talk) 05:19, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

Ok, Real life intervened for a bit, but I would like to gather more opinions on this... please? I think it would "break up" a rather HUGE backlog of stubs...into pieces that could be more workable? Mjquinn_id (talk) 21:15, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Mjquinn id, Redrose64, and Somnifuguist: I am willing to assist where I can in this discussion. And, yes, I agree. There needs to be some kind of script, which can be implemented in the Template's TemplateData, so that upon using say parameter
=pagename
, for instance, and have a list of names for all the different types of tennis-related pages and use, for example, a parameter called<pagename>
after=
sign and Bob's your uncle. Qwerty284651 (talk) 18:56, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
