Tweaking phrasing
editWondered if we could punch up the phrasing for the template! It currently reads:
Hello PAGENAME! Thank you for your contributions to articles related to women. I would like to invite you to become a part of WikiProject Women in Red, a WikiProject focused on creating content regarding women's biographies, women's works, and women's issues and assisting contributors who run into difficulties. If you wish to participate, please visit our WikiProject Women in Red page and click on the "Join" icon at the top of the page. Thanks! ~~~~
I tripped over that first sentence and thought it might be an opportunity to punch up the whole. I would propose something like:
Hello PAGENAME! Thank you for your contributions to articles related to women. I would like to invite you to WikiProject Women in Red, a WikiProject focused on creating entries for women's biographies and related topics and assisting contributors who run into difficulties. If you wish to participate, you can indicate your interest here, or feel free to ask for assistance on our talk page any time. Thanks again for your contributions! ~~~~

- Oh digging into the source code, I understand the issue with the first sentence now: it says “Hi PAGENAME” so it’s pulling the template page name. Ok so that doesn’t need to be changed but perhaps the change to the penultimate sentence is still useful (giving direct links)? Innisfree987 (talk) 21:28, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, Innisfree987, for suggesting improvements. I think it's useful to indicate "Join" but it may be even better to change "...please visit our WikiProject Women in Red page and click on the "Join" icon at the top of the page" to "...you can sign up under "New registrations" on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/New members". I use something along these lines when writing to recent Wikipedia contributors as some of them seem to have difficulty in navigation. I like your addition in regard to the WIR talk page. - Oh yes I like that very much. Thank you and thanks to Peaceray for creating the template! Innisfree987 (talk) 14:34, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Innisfree987 & Ipigott!
- First, a clarification that
Hello {{PAGENAME}}!
changes to the name of the page (but it does not include the namespace) where it is substituted. Some examples: - Second, I went ahead & made the change that Innisfree987 suggested above. Peaceray (talk) 18:11, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much @Peaceray! I got confused because over on the template page it says, “Hello WikiProject Women in Red invite!” But once I looked at the source code I saw what was happening.
Maybe I’ll add nowiki tags for the benefit of the next person who looks.ETA: just kidding, looks more complicated than I know how to do without breaking the template! I’ll also add @Ipigott‘s idea unless there’s any objection! Thanks again all. Innisfree987 (talk) 19:12, 4 January 2024 (UTC)- @Innisfree987: Fine by me! Peaceray (talk) 19:16, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
