Background
edit"The News" was released on December 8, 2022.[1][2][3] According to Williams, "'The News' is one of those songs that came together pretty quickly and felt exciting from the start. It feels like a happy medium between classic Paramore angst and bringing in some influences we've always had but never exploited...watching Zac track drums for this one was one of my favorite memories from the studio."[3]
The song was later remixed by the Linda Lindas as a part of Paramore's remix album, Re: This Is Why.[4]
Composition
edit"The News" is a post-punk,[5][6] alternative rock,[7] and math rock[6] song. According to Loudwire, "the song...is a more driving, upbeat rocker within the verses, but pulls back to deliver a more hypnotic...chorus".[3]
Music video
editThe music video was released the same day as the song and was directed by Mike Kluge and Matthew DeLisi.[3]
Personnel
edit- Hayley Williams – vocals, backing vocals, composition
- Taylor York – guitar, composition

It's a loud, driving, twitchy post-punk song…

…titled "The News," which pairs lyrics about anxiety from a 24-hour news cycle with a blend of pop hooks, math-rock complexity and a post-punk pulse.

"The News" is simply a catchy song and one that fits on the radio alongside previous Paramore chart-toppers, such as "Misery Business" and "Decode". That said, the song most closely recalls the straight-ahead alternative rock sound from which Paramore was built.
