Description and taxonomy
editEBird describes the bird as "A small bird of montane forest undergrowth, where it perches motionless for long periods. Sooty-gray above with white under the base of the tail and on the belly blending to an orange chest and throat, slightly paler on the chin. Most races have a short, thin white eyebrow. Similar to Mugimaki Flycatcher, but has pinkish rather than black legs and lacks any white marks in the wing. Song is a simple, very high-pitched whistled melody.[2]
Subspecies
editEight subspecies are recognized:
- F. l. luzoniensis — Found on Luzon and Mindoro
- F. l. calayensis — Found on Calayan Island
- F. l. rara — Found on Palawan
- F. l. nigrorum — Found on Panay and Negros
- F. l. daggayana — Found on Misamis Oriental
- F. l. montigena — Found on Mount Kitanglad and Mount Apo
- F. l. malindangensis —Found on Mount Malindang
- F. l. matutumensis —Found on Mount Matutum
Feeds on insects. Found singly most of the time but seen in pairs during the breeding season. [3]
Habitat and conservation status
editIts natural habitats at tropical montane forests typically above 1,000 meters above sea level. The supposed subspecies calayensis is virtually unknown and an exception to this as Calayan Island's highest point is just less than 500 meters above sea level.
The IUCN Red List has assessed this bird as least-concern species as it is still common across its range. However, the population is believed to be declining due to the deforestation happening throughout the Philippines.[4]
