History
editTomarata Lake was created around 12,000 years ago by the formation of sand dunes along the coast that prevented water from running out to sea.[4] Thus, no rivers or streams flow into these lakes; their water comes from rainfall and water that seeps through the sand.
Tomarata was a location for the late 19th/early 20th century kauri gum digging trade.[5]
Education
editTomarata School is a coeducational full primary (years 1–8) school with a roll of 72 students as of August 2024.[6][7]
