Two Boats, Ascension Island

Two Boats is a village at the foot of Green Mountain, Ascension Island, about 3 miles (4.8 km) from Wideawake Airfield. With slightly over 120 inhabitants, its the second largest settlement on the island.

History

The two boats were originally placed to provide shade for Royal Marines transporting water in the 19th century. This is why it has that name.

Main sights

The village has a number of sights:

  • Two Boats School. The only school on the island, pupils are transported there from the capital of Georgetown on school busses. Offers education to children in the age span of 3—16. As of 2007, there were plans of expanding the curriculum to 18 years of age.[1] The school was rated favorably by School Inspection Service in 2014.
  • Two Boats Club (bar and snackbar with regular live music).
  • A community centre which provides music, zumba, yoga, fitness classes and other activities.
  • A fresh water swimming pool, one of two on the island.
  • Children's playground.
  • MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) which can be used for playing football, tennis or cricket.[2]
