Announcing... plan for a series of articles: List of professional American football teams in (city)
editWhile I take a break from a series of amusement park articles (see User:B.Wind for details), I'm planning on adding a series of articles cross-referencing our various ones on the National Football League, the various American Football Leagues, the post-1950 leagues that were roughly on the level of the NFL, and the pre-1950 leagues that were at (or above) the AFL or its member teams (PCPFL for example). Post-1950 minor league teams (such as the Continental Football League) will not be included. Of the indoor football teams, only those who competed in the Arena Football League will be considered for inclusion. For the purposes of these list articles, women's football teams and the XFL will not be considered unless there is a consensus to the contrary here or on the individual article's talk page.
Fortunately, most of the research has already done prior to the posting of the various Wikipedia articles. All we need here are some boundaries for inclusion, both of the article and within the article itself. I propose the following:
Cities worthy of this article must be major metropolitan cities, each having had at least three major professional football teams either based in the city or playing their home games in the city's metropolitan area.
The title of each article in the series shall be in the form similar to List of professional American football teams in Miami, which appropriate redirects at List of pro football teams in Miami, Miami professional football teams, Miami pro football teams, Pro football teams in Miami, etc. (please add alternative title forms to this list).
Categories for each article should be one pertaining to the city itself and the new Category:Lists of professional American football teams by city (which will be formed with the creation of the first article of this series); the parent category of this one is Category:American football teams by city.
User:B.Wind/pro football sandbox has been created should anybody wish to use it to help "incubate" these articles. Please note that the articles for New York City and Los Angeles will be massive (New York City's metropolitan area includes Brooklyn, Newark, Staten Island...; Los Angeles had five teams operating at the same time in 1944). I will have to leave the pre-1920 teams to the people who know more about them.
Source, source, source! Whatever sources can't be gleaned from the linked articles should be added, particularly if it involves leagues (like AFL II) and teams (like the Louisville Tanks, Cincinnati Models, and Boston Shamrocks) with a relative paucity of possible citations.
Article format
editLede: "Since (year of first team in a league), (city) has been the home of the following professional American football teams. Professional football teams based in (city) have won (??) championships, (list years and leagues)." (Omit second sentence if the city is home of no league champions)
Sections: List teams in chronological order based on first year of league play (years as independent are omitted; so are years of inactivity). The header should indicate the team's nickname(s) for its games in the city.
Those that have standalone articles should also have a {{main}} hatnote between the header and the text.
Each team should have a brief (one-paragraph) history, starting with a brief "heading" summary for all nicknames and cities served (with years); then a brief summary of formation, titles, etc. If there is a main article, minimize the details and let the hatnote take the reader to more detailed information. If the home field is known, state it (no more than two for any one franchise). There is no need to state that the team folded with a league, unless there are unique circumstances (Los Angeles Dons being merged into the Los Angeles Rams after the 1949 season and before the merger of the NFL and the AAFC).
Where appropriate, the team's most famous logo (sorry, the New York Jets and Denver Broncos each get only one here). Do not include infoboxes unless there is one that summarizes the history of professional football in the city in the same way that the infoboxes used for AFL I teams summarize their history.
Adhere to the KISS principle at all times here. For this reason, List of professional American football teams in New York will be a disambiguation page (as there will be one for Buffalo), with [[List of professional American football teams in New York City] (with List of professional American football teams in Brooklyn redirecting to it), and List of professional American football in suburban New York City "feeding" into it (see User:B.Wind/List of professional American football teams in Greater New York City to see list of many teams).
Add the title of the newly created article to the "See also" section of each team listed in it.
Master list of article titles
editThis list is included to indicate the level of completion in this series. Please add similar titles for any "eligible" city. This list is "seeded" with a list of NFL cities (with those with uncertain "eligibility" in parentheses - these must be checked in the various early league writeups and the Arena Football League article). Ultimately, I'll provide the Wikilinks and full times here... eventually - anybody posting an article in this series is requested to ensure we have a bluelink for it below (many thanks).
