Martyn Del Castilho born 10 May 1989 is a Barbadian chess FIDE Master and six-time national champion.
He has defeated multiple grandmasters and has represented Barbados at six Chess Olympiads with distinction in Spain 2004, Germany 2008, Russia 2010, Turkey 2012, Norway 2014 & Azerbaijan 2016. He was part of the team in 2016 which scored the best ever result for Barbados at the Olympiad. Throughout his career he has had a consistent string of performances, winning the Sagicor Open Junior three times consecutively and the Barbados national championships four times consecutively proving himself as one of the best chess players Barbados has ever produced.
Junior years
editMartyn was taught how to play chess at the age of six by his older brother Dominic Del Castilho. It wasn't until he reached The Lodge Secondary school at twelve that he developed an interest for chess. He played his first chess tournament in 2001 representing his school team on board four at the United Insurance Interschool Chess Championships.
