The Archive in the House of Ruhr History (AHGR)[1], formerly the Archive for Social Movements, is an institution of the Ruhr History Foundation based in Bochum.

The AHGR was founded in 1998 with the History of the Ruhr Foundation on the initiative of the social historian Klaus Tenfelde. The founders were the German Coal Mining Association, the IG Bergbau, Chemie und Energie (IG BCE), RAG Aktiengesellschaft, DMT Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung, the Ruhr-University Bochum and the city of Bochum.

The archive is located in the centre of the city of Bochum not far from the Schauspielhaus in the House of Ruhr History, which also houses the Foundation Library and the Institute for Social Movements of the Ruhr-University Bochum.

Archival holdings

The AHGR preserves record ands files that provide information about historical processes of the Ruhr Region. The focus of the archive is on holdings of actors in the past and present that are located between the level of the municipalities and the level of the Bundesland NRW. It is particularly interested in the factor of labour that shaped the land and people in the coal and steel region, as well as the planning of the area, the management of structural change and, last but not least, the work and activities of women and men who played a significant role in shaping the Ruhr area.[2]

The archive keeps

  • personal papers of women and men from the Ruhr region,
  • records and files of the IG BCE and its predecessor organisations IG Bergbau und Energie, Gewerkschaft Leder, and IG CPK,
  • records and files of the Regionalverband Ruhr and its predecessor organisations, the Kommunalverbund Ruhr and the Siedlungsverband Ruhrkohlebezirk.


Access

The archive is open to all members of the public and offers its holdings to all interested parties for inspection free of charge. Documents from the holdings can be inspected in the reading room during the opening hours of the Foundation Library.
