Virginia Gym

edit

Adam began boxing at the age of 13 in a kickboxing Gym in Virginia a neighbouring town of Mullagh which is where Adam resides. Mick Dwoney an established kickboxing coach, taught Adam the basics of boxing while he trained in kickboxing. While Adam enjoyed kickboxing it wasn't the sport for him and when he started to box he found it much more enjoyable than kickboxing. Adam stopped kickboxing and started to train for boxing full time instead. In Virginia's gym Mick began to teach Adam how to move and box in the Amatuer game. At first Adam boxed to keep fit and stay out of trouble. But after a few months of hard training his skill level in the sport rose and he began to seek competitive bouts.

Cavan BC

edit

Mick Downy had trained three other lads to box from Virginia, Simon Caden, Luke Caden(Of no realation) and Niall Kerr. All of whom had boxed competivly before through Cavan BC. Adam began to train in Cavan BC with Brian Mckeon, he also got frequent sparing in the bigger Cavan gym. Sean Crowely and Johnny Mitchel also helped Adam with training along with Brian and Mick, to get him "ring-fit" for the start of season Novice Competition.

Mid-Ulster Novices

edit

In late 2007(start of boxing season 08) Adam faught in the Mid-Ulster Novice were he got to the Final and stopped his oppnent, J.McConnan(Gilford) in the Second round due to a second standing eight-count, which Cullen forced on McConnan with sharp jabs and hard right hands.

Mid-Ulster Open Class

edit

This Tournament was seen as a big step up for Cullen who himself was a novice with only two fights under his belt at this stage, this was a test for him. His opponent D.Quinn(Glenard) was a much more experienced fighter, and had quite a considerable height and weight advantage. This was an extremly though fight for Adam in (his opponent forced him to go the three full rounds), which saw pure Grit, determination and boxing skill get him a points win with a huge 14 point lead (23/9). Adam also forced a stoppage on Quinn late in round three.

Cavan BC Home Show

edit

Adam's success earned him a slot on Cavans home show, which say fellow virginia club-mates Charlie Glacken, Simon Caden and Luke Caden also box on the night alongside, Cavans Olympic Hopeful John-Jo Nevin and Four Nations Champion and cousin of John-Jo,David Nevin. In this Exibition bout Adam faced off against Aaron McCann of Tyholland. Cullen had a 2 kilo weight advantage, but at 14 His opponent "out-aged" him at 16. McCann was another though fight for Cullen. McCann was a tidy fighter, and what he lacked in power he backed up with punching speed and sharpness. In the opening round McCann came forward and tried to mark himself out as the aggressor, but McCann didn't count on Cullen's Speed or power and was caught flush with a devastating counter combo, which combined both head and body shots which forced a count for the Tyholland boxer. In the second round of the bout,(schedueled for three ronuds) Cullen showed his Strength and planted his feet while still moving forward enough to trap his opponent in a neutral corner and off-load with fast and powerful straight right hand and sharp left hook combos. The Referee stopped the contest midway through round two in favour of the Cavan lad.

Gunning for All-Ireland

edit

Although it is his first year competivly boxing this young Prospect is already gunning for All-Ireland qualification, after winning his Mid-Ulster Final Cullen has made it to the Ulster final which is the only fight standing between him and All-Ireland qualification, and the chance to box in the National Stadium in which some of Adams idols in the boxing world have boxed in including club-mates John-Jo and David Nevin along with Professional fighter Andy Murray. Adam may well make it to the All-Irelands but it will be an extremlly big chalenge for him that will test this young fighters heart and ability to the limit.
