Making Headway Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to care and comfort for children with brain and spinal cord tumors while funding medical research geared toward better treatments and a cure.[1]
History
editThe foundation was established in 1996 by a small group of parents — Maya and Edward Manley and Clint Greenbaum — whose own children had undergone treatment for brain tumors. They thought that traditional hospital-based medical programs were not efficient enough to reintegrate the child physically and emotionally with their families and communities.[2]
For more than 20 years, the foundation has been supporting families of children diagnosed with brain or spinal cord tumors, providing assistance, holistic programs and services. Making Headway also supports a variety of medical grants aimed at finding improved treatments and eventually a cure.[3]
Programs
editSpecific programs include: Family Events, Fairytale Yoga, Psychological Counseling, Educational Advocacy, Bereavement Services, Scholarship Funds, Neuro-Oncology Fellowship Program, and a variety of medical and clinical research grants.[4]
Recognitions
editMaking Headway has been ranked at the Platinum Level by Guidestar.com[5] and was listed as a “Top Rated” nonprofit by Greatnonprofit.org.[6]
Making Headway was named “Non-Profit of the Year” by the Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce.[7] Their blog was also recently named one of the “Top 50 Brain Cancer Blogs and Websites on the Web”.[8]
In his book Giving - How Each Of Us Can Change The World, Bill Clinton tells the story of the foundation and highlights its work.[9]
