Nemiscau Airport (IATA: YNS, ICAO: CYHH) is an aerodrome serving the Cree community of Nemaska in Eeyou Istchee, northern Quebec, Canada. It is located approximately 4 nautical miles (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) southeast of Nemaska, near the Route du Nord.
The airport is owned by Hydro-Québec and is operated by Nadashu Corporation, a business arm of the Cree Nation of Nemaska.[citation needed] Originally developed primarily to support Hydro-Québec's activities in the James Bay region, the aerodrome was formally opened to public use on November 17, 2025.[1]
History
[edit]Nemiscau Airport was developed by Hydro-Québec to provide air access for its infrastructure and operations in the James Bay territory. For many years, use of the aerodrome was primarily associated with Hydro-Québec's activities.
On November 17, 2025, the Government of Quebec and Hydro-Québec announced the official opening of the aerodrome to the public. The Government of Quebec described Nemiscau as the first Hydro-Québec aerodrome to be opened for public use.[1]
The initiative involved Hydro-Québec, the Société de développement de la Baie-James (SDBJ), the Cree Development Corporation and the Cree Nation of Nemaska. Hydro-Québec retained ownership of the aerodrome while partnerships were established to increase Cree participation in its management, maintenance and development.[1]
SDBJ and the Cree Development Corporation established Aakutaah Holding Corporation, a jointly owned entity associated with the management of Hydro-Québec aerodromes in the region. For Nemiscau, an additional partnership involving the Cree Nation of Nemaska was established through Nikaanch.[1]
According to the Government of Quebec, the new operating arrangement was expected to support approximately 32 jobs and included close to $5 million in investment, primarily for equipment.[1]
The government identified improved regional mobility, employment, economic development, tourism and business opportunities among the anticipated benefits of opening the aerodrome to the public.[1]
Operations
[edit]Nemiscau Airport has one gravel runway, designated 09/27, measuring 5,000 feet (1,500 m) in length. The airport has an elevation of approximately 802 feet (244 m) above mean sea level.
Hydro-Québec remains the owner of the aerodrome. Airport operations are carried out by Nadashu Corporation.[citation needed]
Nadashu Corporation is based in Nemaska. In 2026, a consortium involving Nadashu Corporation and AtkinsRéalis received a federal standing offer from Transport Canada for airport engineering services in Cree areas.[2]
Regional air access
[edit]Nemiscau Airport is included in the Government of Quebec's Regional Air Access Program, which provides discounted air travel for eligible passengers travelling within Quebec.
Eligible travel involving Nemiscau is included among the routes qualifying for discounts under the program, subject to the eligibility requirements established by the Government of Quebec.[3]

Regional significance
[edit]The opening of Nemiscau Airport to public use expanded air access to Nemaska and the surrounding Eeyou Istchee region.
The airport supports passenger transportation, community access, economic activity and regional connectivity while complementing road access through the Route du Nord. The operating partnerships associated with the airport also form part of broader efforts to increase Cree participation in transportation infrastructure and economic development in northern Quebec.[1]
